[R5] Owen / Humanwine / Bonde Do Role / DMST / Hella / Green Milk + News !
Hellos -
It's almost April! Its almost 80 degrees today! Spring is here! Let's celebrate life and the pursuit of happiness and party like it's New Years Eve in the year 9999 (that would be the sickest party ever - I hope I am still alive for it). We have like 78 shows this week and they all will be filled with beautiful, well dressed, smart people who own the best record collections having fun!
Tonight (tuesday march 27th) OWEN (mike kinsella) and ROCKY VOTOLATO bring their indie friendly kind of singer songwriter alt-country to The First Unitarian Church. Across town HUMANWINE featuring members of THE DRESDEN DOLLS do their freaky weird goth / punk / balkan thing at Johnny Brendas. On Wednesday (march 28th) HORSE THE BAND gallops into town with their smarty pants nintendo-metal live show alongside HEAVY HEAVY LOW LOW who who all all the the kids kids love love. On Thursday (march 29th) we have COLD WAR KIDS at The First Unitarian Church but it doesn't matter because you can't go because it's SOLD OUT. Unless you are one of those crazy people that is buying pairs of $10 tickets for $150 on stubhub.
But don't worry sad ponies - we have something way more fun than a "rock show" on Thursday - for we have Diplo's Mad Decent / Domino Records BONDE DO ROLE, who came here all the way from Brazil playing along side smart pants rappers - PLASTIC LITTLE - in the craziest most "sparks-y" venue of all time (well aside from the giant heart in the franklin institute) UPSTAIRS AT SALS . Yes that crazy bar where people act like its the year 9999 every single evening. The show was supposed to take place at the infamous Danger Danger house - but apparently something bad happened there - we're not exactly sure - we'll let you know when we get official word - but the show will now be part of the BROADZILLA dj night which takes place every Thursday at Sals. They are great peoples with close connections to Ardmore. Check the new section for more details - unfortunately the show is now 21+ (but only $5!)
On Friday (march 30th) we have another show you cant go to - MENOMENA at Johnny Brendas - the UK band FIELD MUSIC were supposed to play as well - but they canceled because of some unknown reason (maybe they are linked to Danger Danger house in the space time continuum ) . More details below. But if you like your indie rock music with the occasional horn (as menomena has) - then check out Toronto's DO MAKE SAY THINK who are playing that very same evening at the church . Lots of people (including us) mention they feature members of BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE - but DMST was way around before those dudes (and ladies) were a real band, so we like to think it's the other way around. Ohh and this show will be a seated sanctuary affair - how lovely!
Finally on Saturday March 31st at Johnny Brendas we have the equivalent of Making Time for stoners and psych rock dudes as a bunch of the stoner/psych/rock DJs from such nights as Rocktits and Harsh Mellow will be combining forced to form this uber-weeded voltron like DJ who will destroy you brains with their quality rock selctions as Japan's GREEN MILK FROM PLANET ORANGE and Philadelphia's BIRDS OF MAYA kick out the jams live as a bunch of "heavy dudes" project acid visuals on the walls. From now on - this evening will be forever referred to as "WASTING TIME" (hardy-hard get it - making time) . Remember when we did a DJ night called Snorted? Anyways finally rapping things up - This Sunday (april 1st) we have the Philadelphia debut of the new and improved full HELLA band - whose new album destroys - at the First Unit Church.
Full previews are available down in section two of the newsletter for all of these shows. Also we are happy to inform you that there is a Making Time this Friday March 30th at Pure Nightclub w/ three special international live guests. Also one of our fav rappers of all time - GURU (from Gangstarr) is performing with a full live this Wednesday at The Trocadero. Full details are available for both shows down below...

Rocky Votolato
WAXWING's golden-throated frontman ROCKY VOTOLATO has his own thing going on. Stripped-and-sparse soul-bearing that moves from somber ballads and acoustic laments to driving rockers with a band featuring members of Pedro The Lion, Roadside Monument and Red Stars Theory. Wise, honest, and beautiful. Barsuk Records.

Owen
Very warm and pretty! Waves of dreamy strummi-ness and murmured vocals. Drifting in a similar path to that of Tristeza, the newest American Analog Set album or fellow Chicago, IL mellow boys Sea And Cake... actually, I very much prefer this. So who is Owen anyway? The man in question is the multi-talented Mr. Mike Kinsella formerly of American Football, Cap'n Jazz, Joan Of Arc, and Owls. Doing it all himself: writing and performing all the soothing sounds you hear. Polyvinyl

Drag The River
A decade-running alt country/indie rock combo led by CHAD PRICE (ALL) and JON SNODGRASS (ARMCHAIR MARTIAN). American songcraft for fans of Uncle Tupelo, Replacements and Lucero. Colorado. Suburban Home Records.

OWEN
The Kinsella brothers (Tim and Mike to their mom Donna) are kinda a big deal in their birth city of Chicago. As for the rest of the country, well we're quite indebted to their scatter-brained indie rock legacy as well. To sum up why in a paragraph would be damn near impossible given the dramatic creative changes the pair has made between their time in Owls, the almighty Cap’n Jazz and the mighty polarizing Joan of Arc, not to mention Mike’s time in Owen (the outfit he's about to headline the Church with, featuring the stellar support slot work of former Waxwing guitarist Rocky Votolato) and the dearly-missed American Football.
Presenting a list of reasons why you should care about Mikey:
1. For better or for worse, Cap’n Jazz helped define emo’s early days as much as Rites of Spring, Sunny Day Real Estate or Braid. Arty but still accessible, their stay in the underground was short-lived and appreciated much later through a double-CD retrospective that’s now considered one of the greatest emo releases ever, right alongside Diary, Pinkerton and End on End.
2. Mike’s follow-up group, American Football, had a lone self-titled LP in 1999, but it’s still considered a prime piece of intelligent, emotive late ‘90s pop.
3. Joan of Arc is one of the ballsiest, most refreshing acts around—again, for better or worse. Able to be post-rock one moment, punky the next, and folky/emo/completely-startling somewhere in between, they either garner praise or utter disdain with each passing record. This year is the group’s 10th anniversary, so they’re celebrating with two records. One is a self-described “casual folk-drone record” called Eventually, All at Once. It is, in the words of Allmusic.com, “spooky but delightful.” Also released on the same day was The Intelligent Design of Joan of Arc, an essential collection of rare tracks from the past decade. Somehow, with all their eggs in one basket (check the cover art), it’s all starting to make sense now. Or as Allmusic added, “a slab like this is terribly useful in seeing how a group evolves, distills, explores and just flat out blows it in the process of becoming a band with its own way of doing things.”
4. Owen is essentially M.K. reconfigured in an intimate, much more casual setting than his older brother’s band. His current album, At Home With Owen, is singer-songwriter fare with a bit of a bite.
5. Quite simply, the Kinsellas are one of the most talented, eclectic (and eccentric) families to ever grace indie rock. As is apparent in the following excerpt from an interview between Tim, Mike and … their mom.
Donna: What influenced you guys to not only start playing music, but to be with it 10 years later, 10 years after college? What were your major influences?
Tim: What, to keep doing it?
Donna: Well, first of all to get into it. I saw the passion, but I still felt that it would get old after a while, but I should have recognized the passion was there. Ok, tell me how old it gets.
Tim: [It] has gotten old. For me it’s better than getting up for work, and seeing my wife get up for work…
Donna: Yeah, you’ve said that before, and I think that’s in your genes, because my Mom tells the story that she always felt bad when her Mom and Dad got up on really cold winter mornings that were dark and had to go wait for a bus, and she’s always been, you know, sad about that in the morning, and now I’ve passed that on to you. I never quite felt that way about people getting up.
Tim: I like getting up early.
Donna: Yeah, but you don’t sleep, so you’re not exactly getting up.
Mike: Those are the best hours.
Donna: They are wonderful hours, early morning. Okay, so, the influences! I have to tell you: every time I read an interview about you guys, I look for that answer. And when people have asked me that, it seems to be that Grandma’s around, and she always butts in with “What do you mean what influenced them? They were probably eight years old––you were taking them to Lollapalooza, playing Kiss records, taking them into the city to buy these, you know, what do you call these records that are bootlegged?” You know, she feels like I enabled you guys, when your interest was there when you were very young. I just say I was doing some pretty good parenting.
Tim: We did get those Kiss records from one of the neighbors’ garage sales. I was like, 3?
Mike: I got so many Kiss records at the garage sale. That’s when I realized that you could get laid playing music.

Humanwine
Members of The Dresden Dolls! Somewhere between Gypsy Punk, Cabaret, Steampunk and Goth

Nicki Jaine
To fully enjoy an authentic cabaret, you first have to go through Nicki Jaine. Nicki Jaine is a natural. She has a beautiful, Germanic appearance that lends greatly to the presented show effect of a genuine cabaret chanteuse – sleek build, sculptured features, and a deep, honeyed voice. Philadelphia.

Mecury Radio Theater
A strange mix of instro punk (not unlike later man or astroman) while we project story books we've created on stage, between songs a narrator takes the audience through short clips of the stories. Philly.

Fans of the Dresden Dolls know to always show up early to their gigs, if only to stare at the mimes, circus performers and general freaks and geeks that always assembly in the lobby, by the stage and in front of the merch booth before things really get started. Sometimes the early bird even gets treated to a decent, handpicked opening act. In the case of the duo's last cross-country tour, that act was Humanwine, a couple of friends and like-minded mad drama club dropouts. Basically, if you dig the Dresden's, you'll LOVE Humanwine. Not convinced yet and too broke to buy Humanwine's new CD, Fighting Naked? Hit up iTunes for the Dresden Dolls track "Delilah," a seven-minute, brittle power ballad that just so happens to feature Humanwine vocalist Holly Brewer. To make matters more enticing on Humanwine's current tour, dexterous DD drummer Brian Viglione is on hand as a special guest for the "post apocalyptic theatre with a socio-political tongue."

Horse The Band
Horse The Band deconstruct hardcore and metal, combining them with a sharp tongue and inventive keyboard leads. Playing what they refer to as "Nintendocore", the group delivers a harsh sound while displaying a manic punishment and twitchy self-abuse, but in a happy and catchy way. Combat Records
Sound Clips :

Heavy Heavy Low Low
It is hard to believe that the guys in Heavy Heavy Low Low are not free jazz composers or classically trained metal scholars when you hear them attack their instruments. The band creates a densely layered collage of noise, imbued with the speediness of hardcore punk, the low crushing tones of death metal, the loose and dissonant playfulness of indie rock, and arrangements that hit multiple places at once dissolving into waves of chaos. Ferret Records

So Many Dynamos
Melding pop with disco, punk and R&B ala The Dismemberment Plan. Well maybe not even ala, almost EXACTLY like D-Plan with their moog sounds, insane drum fills and hi-hat work, gang choruses, dissonant guitar interplay, abrupt stops, and the frenzied pace. Skrocki Records

Light This City
An epic thrash attack from the Bay Area's most promising band.
Horse the Band should really be rotting away in jail right now, forced to stare at a cold jail cell wall and contemplate what they’ve done. The hotel incident is only the half of it, too. That’d be the time they toasted the birthday of keyboardist Erik Engstrom’s girlfriend by hanging a piñata from a hotel room sprinkler and bashing it with a toilet plunger, blindfolded, until the inevitable occurred and three rooms received a rush of water akin to a small dam bursting. As childish and careless as that incident may seem, it’s got nothing on an evening in Pittsburgh that began with a case of wine coolers and a liter of Jack Daniel’s, and closed with the following unthinkable acts: Guitarist David Isen downing a shot of whiskey in his ass, former (maybe this is why) bassist Andy sticking a beer bong in his ass, and vocalist Nathan Winneke performing an Indian burn on “some dude’s boner.” It must be mentioned that night’s performance also turned into a low budget porno of sorts.
“Nathan had just finished making jokes about how he hates Indians and wants to roll them down hills,” explains Engstrom, as he gets ready to fold American Apparel shirts at 9 in the morning. “Then this kid came onstage, got on his knees and Nathan peed into his mouth and he drank it all. We couldn’t get the video of that to convert [to DVD], which is really sad.” And you thought R. Kelly had a problem. Given these admittedly fucked variables (“It was really funny at the time, but when we watched it later, we thought it was pretty weird”), it’s probably a good thing the Effing 69 World Tour DVD is self-funded and for sale only at shows and online. Otherwise, Horse the Band’s label, Combat Records (a division of Koch, the home of William Hung and Joan Baez), might move from mild amusement to profound terror at the legal ramifications. Especially when the prankster reputation of that imprint’s prized new signing is renowned to the point where people are blaming them for stuff they didn’t even do, like spraying the equipment of the band that shares their rehearsal space. “They were like, ‘I’m not fucking around; you have 24 hours to get your stuff out of here or I’m going to press charges,’” says Engstrom. “We had parties in there, but we didn’t pour soda all over their shit. I need to find the name of that band, so people can annoy the hell out of them.”
For now, people have chosen to chastise Horse the Band over more important matters—namely their polarizing brand of Nintendocore. The singular sound was stumbled upon back in 2002, when Engstrom borrowed Winneke’s keyboard for a month and tweaked its settings so much that 8-bit Metroid, Super Mario and Megaman tones started spurting out. A pianist since the age of six, Engstrom was looking for the perfect complement to his twisted teenage tales of exploding bunnies and brain matter eaten away by dementia. He found it in these accidental effects. As the band endured a punk rock requisite number of lineup changes in the Lake Forest area of California (Winneke, for one, first joined as the drummer, then became the bassist, and finally succumbed to singing), Engstrom’s early songs took on heavier and harder shapes, while Winneke added satirical and surprisingly serious lyrics about the darkest recesses of the human psyche and… the “Cutsman” boss from Megaman. By the time of their 2003 debut, R. Borlax [Pluto], Nintendocore was born and message boards lit up with loads of “genius” and “pure shit” talk.
“I don’t see the argument that we’re a gimmick band,” says Engstrom, turning vaguely defensive for a brief second. “Sure, we have funny lyrics sometimes, but half of them are serious. It’s all right though. I hate a lot of bands before I hear them, whether it’s because my girlfriend likes them or someone I hate is wearing their shirt at a show. I’ll hear one song and say, ‘That’s gay.’” Horse the Band haters just may be converted to the group’s growing cult after hearing their highly evolved LP, The Mechanical Hand. Engstrom admits they first formed the band simply to play shows and get a hundred or so kids singing along, much like their early inspiration Thrice (circa Identity Crisis). Critics and listeners took note, though, and Matt Bayles (Botch, Mastodon, Isis) signed on to record, mix and produce Horse's second effort. The manic collection improves upon its predecessor in every aspect; Winneke’s vocals suddenly have an incredible range (everything from a Blood Brothers swagger to death metal scowl), and Engstrom’s synth melodies add a key lead layer to most of the songs. Jokingly, we ask him if the band would be fucked without his meticulously modified keyboard.
“I intentionally went for the Nintendo sound on this record, so it’s important,” says Engstrom. “I have the settings saved on a CD and e-mailed to 18 different accounts in case someone’s house burns down.” Besides mastering the buzzing nostalgia trip that his synth lines trigger, the band has also made a significant move toward blending its absurdist imagery and black humor. What seems like another deliberate mindfuck on the surface is in fact full of double metaphors and carefully phrased Clockwork Orange-like narratives, with only the occasional instance of self-loathing. “The new Scars of Tomorrow album is called The Horror of Realization,” says Engstrom, laughing. “Well, I don’t wake up in the morning and realize that life sucks. I wake up and maybe want to eat a hamburger or go pee because it hurts. That’s my thought process.”

Do Make Say Think
Toronto-based sonic rock instrumentalists featuring members of Broken Social Scene. A continuation of the group's quiet space and drone-rock foundations designed as a launching pad for experiments in jazz-inflected motives, loud psych rock explorations and pop sensibilities. Driven with layers of guitars, horns, analog synthesizers and phased percussion. Beautiful, melodic and pumping bottom-end. Constellation Records.

Lullabye Arkestra
Members of Broken Social Scene, Fiest and Do Make Say Think. Minimal, stripped down and raunchy rock songs using their signature fuzzed out bass sound and banshee vocals.
The proximity (Canada) and label (Constellation Records) of Do Make Say Think and Godspeed You Black Emperor! is bound to always draw comparisons between the two's take on instrumental rock even though they are, you know, quite different. While Godspeed seemingly invented post-rock in an epic poetry vein right alongside Mogwai, Do Make Say Think is all over the place creatively, building psychedelic, jazzy and/or pleasantly noisy pieces from trumpets, keys, drums, guitars and a number of random instruments most musicians wouldn't know the first thing about playing properly. Basically, prepare to have your head blown off by these guys and be sure to show up early for the opening set of Lullabye Arkestra, a supergroup of sorts featuring members of Broken Social Scene, Feist and Do Make Say Think.

Hella
Hella, a champion of the duo set-up (after all, all of their releases up to this point consisted of just Hill and Seim), say the limited line-up was done out of necessity. Spencer explains “We only started playing as a two piece because we couldn't make it work with everybody.” Zach adds “When we initially started Hella, we had an idea that it was going to be a full band, and it didn't happen that way, so we just started out playing as a two piece. It just kind of snowballed, and ended up being a duo for years - but we kept in the back of our minds that we wanted to follow through with our original vision of eventually doing a full band.” And that's just what they did - Hella members Zach Hill (drums) and Spencer Seim (guitar) are now joined by an extended line-up. Zach considers the rebirth to be "Easily the best thing we've done under the moniker, for sure." Rest assured, the addition of new members has certainly not taken away from the group’s precision sound - it only expands on it. “It's definitely a bit different, just because we need to keep our parts very interesting and play them the way we want to play. But also leave room for everybody. “Everybody that's playing with us now, we're all under the impression that will be playing with us for a long time. This is basically 'our band' now.”

Ponytail
Because guitars can still beat up computers, bands still use them. Ponytail is a quartet that sounds like the Boredoms are from Maryland and have a girl singer. With a new album in the works, you better scribble them down fast. Monitor Records.

Who's Your Favorite Son God?
Calculus-level math/psych sorcery. Dual guitars scrabble and inter-twine, alternately screeching atonally and melodically shimmering to build dramatic crescendoes, while Zac's fluttering vocal effects vin to the galvanic yang of his free-jazz-damaged drumming . From Sacramento.

Hella guitarist Spencer Seim, on why his beloved duo is suddenly a full five-piece band with (gasp!) a vocalist: " We started thinking about doing Hella as a five-piece before we even started the band. [Drummer] Zach [Hill] and I had been playing with [bassist] Carson [McWhirter] and [Zach’s cousin and guitarist] Josh [Hill], who are now currently members of the band, for about six months. We wrote a batch of songs but everyone was just in a different place back then and it didn’t work out at that time.
So we’ve had these songs that we created like in ’99, and now everybody was kind of just in the right place and ready to quit everything else they were doing to play. We also happened upon an amazing singer [Aaron Ross] who agreed to sing with us. That was a huge push to help us make the record we wanted to make in ’99 but couldn’t. We’ve been experimenting with music as a two-piece since then, but the stuff that we really want to make and the stuff that we’ve been striving for all this time is the music that we can make with this full band.
We knew from the beginning that at some point we would be going to do a larger band. You can even look back at very early interviews. To us, it would be kind of ridiculous to change the name of the band because it still is Hella. People will definitely notice differences because it’s obviously now a full band with a crazy vocalist. But it’s obvious it’s still us. It’s just us expressing different things musically. This is Hella from now on.
