Battles
Battles consists of Ian Williams (Don Caballero, Storm And Stress), Tyondai Braxton (son of jazz genius Anthony and solo artist in his own right), John Stanier (Helmet, Tomahawk) and Dave Konopka (Lynx). These gents have joined forces to tangle their guitar strings, various drum implements, and electronic gadgetry into a big knot that might seem loose but is probably really tight if you were to try and unravel it. And while their compositions might be 'difficult', listening to this is not. Battles sounds like a post rock band (a la Don Cab or Lynx) playing the music of Conlon Nancarrow on Raymond Scott's Manhattan Research equipment. Or Gershon Kingsley making math rock. Weird, complex, delightful. Warp Records.

"I've always been really into techno," says Battles drummer John Stanier, with a poker face that betrays his heavy metal background. "My girlfriend actually lives in Cologne, right up the street from Kompakt." That's right: The drummer dude from Battles––not the soft-spoken one that drinks coco in bars––is the one that asked Kompakt's own DJ Koze to remix "Atlas," the first single off the band's forthcoming, frenzied-as-fuck/rhythm-riding Warp LP, Mirrored. And the Luciano/Ricardo Villalobos/Michael Mayer fan would rather not stop there. As he explains it, "When it comes to remixing, I definitely check my email."

Here's hoping that inbox fills up sometime soon. In the meantime, we asked Koze and Four Tet (who asked Battles to remix a track last year) to talk about Battles' not-so-obvious connection to dance and electronic music.

DJ Koze

Were you a fan of Battles before they asked you to remix one of their tracks?

No, I didn't hear them 'til this remix.

What about some of their related bands, like Helmet, Don Caballero and Tomahawk?

When I was 16, I was much more into the guitar sound than I am now. At that time, I was listening to Helmet, Slint, Mudhoney and Dinosaur Jr., to name a few. So I was really surprised when John Stanier asked me to do the remix. It was a little bit like a trip into the past.

How did you approach the remix since you were starting with a song that wasn't strictly an electronic or dance track? Was it harder or easier?

It was a bit harder, cause I wanted to catch that special weirdness of the track, but transform it into an abstract electronic groove. So there were difficulties with the tempo and the rhythm, which was originally a shuffle. But John said I could do and destroy everything I want to free myself and make something new out of it. And I think I did. I hope they like the remix. They say they do, but you can't trust anybody nowadays.

Four Tet

Why did you choose Battles to remix "A Joy?"

Things like remixing seem to be quite obvious things to explore for them. I think stuff like hip hop and dance music seems just as important to them as rock music, which made them a perfect choice for a remix as far as I was concerned.

I assume you're a fan. Why? And how do you think they stand out right now?

I'm a huge fan. I think they're one of the most exciting bands around at the moment and their live shows have managed to blow my mind quite a few times now. I first saw them about two years ago. Prefuse [73] had been going on to me about how amazing they were, so I was really keen to see them. I've seen them about 15 times now I think. The music is boundary pushing, but also soulful and melodic. It's like the heaviest dance music being played on guitars and also nods at everything from Miles Davis to Steve Reich to Wu Tang when I hear it.

Were you a fan of the group's previous projects, such as Don Caballero or Helmet?

I was into Helmet when I was a teenager. Meantime is great and they were so heavy live. I've got more into Don Caballero recently. It passed me by at the time but now I've found that they did some amazing stuff.

What did you think of the final remix they did for you?

I thought it was great. I told them I thought it sounded like Stockhausen and Ja Rule making a record together.

The Ponys
Just signed to Matador Records! The Ponys sound like '80s UK post-punks trying to sound like '60s US garage rockers, but The Ponys turn that spacetime vertigo into a Farfisa-fueled, fuzz guitar fantasy camp. They have played a bunch of R5 shows in the past opening up for bigger bands including The Arcade Fire, Bloc Party and The Unicorns. The Ponys cleverly destroy everything that you used to hate, and then force you to love it with such a unique, swirling sound and jaggedly perverse style that you're left in an orange haze of confusion, pleasure, and overwhelming satisfaction. Seriously.

Black Lips
Just signed to Vice Records! Though barely in their 20's, the Black Lips have already toured the US and Europe several times, released two albums on Bomp! records, lost a lead guitarist in a car crash, built a rabid cult following and earned a well deserved reputation one of the wildest live bands around due to onstage fist fights, nudity, violence, arson, projectile vomiting and other body fluids. You don't want to stand to close to the stage at a Black Lips performance. This grimy and chaotic four-piece garage-punk band truly don't give a fuck and will unintentionally prove it live time and again. Formed with the intention to cross the sound of the "Back From The Grave" 60's garage compilation series with the Germs, the Lips have developed a sound unlike anyone else. Anyone familiar with the group will no doubt be a bit surprised by the sound of their latest "Let It Bloom" album which, while still skuzzy and raw, contains their catchiest and most melodic moments to date. If Royal Trux had listened to the Troggs instead of the Rolling Stones, they might sound like this (though the album does sound quite Stonesy at times)

Before we get to an exclusive studio report from the Black Lips (presented by DIW Magazine, www.diwmagazine.com), here's a rundown of the Ponys' latest LP:

The prevailing theme of the Ponys' previous album, 2005’s Celebration Castle—completely disregarding their garage roots in favor of late-’80s British jangle pop—put a great big smile across this face. The idea that short-sighted garage rockers were scratching their empty heads at the greatest Close Lobsters album that the Close Lobsters never released was amusing to no end. It appears that the progression may have gotten to the Ponys, however, because Turn the Lights Out is a slight return to Nuggetsville, albeit the ’80s Nuggetsville that is fortunately heavy on the L.A. Paisley Underground sound. Yes, it rocks a lot harder than Celebration Castle but in such a perfect guitargasm, psyched-to-the-tits fashion. Well, they’re not as loud as old Comets on Fire or some such blowouts, but this still delivers some fantastic drugged-out guitar packaging and some equally exhilarating pop smarts. Leading light Jered Gummere’s fake Brit accent-cum-Tom Verlaine affectation still dominates the vocal side of things here, but that’s a small sacrifice for what may actually be the guitar album of 2007.

And now, without further ado ... The Black Lips...

Located just off the beaten path in northwest Atlanta is an unassuming light brown cottage fittingly called the Living Room. It’s where the Atlanta five-piece Black Lips are recording their first proper studio album with Vice Records, the last of the group’s planned 2007 releases, including a live record due out on Vice at the end of February and a vinyl collection of outtakes from 2005’s Let It Bloom (In the Red).

Warm red light and thrift-store couches fill the Living Room’s front area as friends of the band mingle. In the adjacent room, lead singer Cole Alexander puts the finishing touches on a country song reminiscent of Gram Parsons. Guitarist Ian St. Pe speaks in hushed tones so as not to interrupt the recording process. “We're actually bringing in a pedal-steel player tomorrow,” he says. “He's the real deal. Cole found him at a bar about 10 or 15 minutes outside of town. He wears a big cowboy hat.”

Those familiar with the psychedelic garage sounds of Black Lips might raise an eyebrow at the idea of pedal steel making an appearance on the band's latest. The group’s dabbled in country sounds in the past but, by and large, stuck to the thrash-and-smash noises of snottier ’60s rock influences. St. Pe explains the diversion as a natural progression on the part of an exploratory and musically intensive group.

“We're doing more of everything that we enjoy doing,” he says. “We love the blues, love the country, love the garage, love the girl groups from the ’60s. If it’s new to the record, it’s not new to us. It’s the same stuff we love, just maybe we haven't recorded that style yet.”

With a batch of about 20 songs, the band plans to trim the fat and release this as-yet-untitled record in the fall. And for a young and obviously talented group of guys that once used its recording budget to fix its shared van, the money (not to mention reindeer steak dinners in Norway) Vice has given Black Lips to record this new project is both deserved and appreciated.

“You can say that we're not going to be working any time soon,” St. Pe says with a smile. “Naw, I'm just kidding. No, I'm not actually kidding; we won't be working anytime soon. They're treating us good, and we're going to treat them good. But this is what we love doing. I'm tired of washing dishes. If I leave this, it’s not like I can go back to being a doctor. It’s like, radio, magazines, TV, hell yeah.”
