The Steve Miller Band Launches Summer North American Tour On May 21st

HOLLYWOOD, Calif., May 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The Steve Miller Band will launch an extensive North American summer tour on May 21st in Milwaukee, WI. Highlights include two nights (July 13th & 14th) at Chicago's Ravinia, a 17,000 capacity venue that the band sold out last year in less than 24 hours, and a hometown show on September 22nd at Mountain View, CA's Shoreline Amphitheatre (where the band filmed the concert contained on the DVD from 2006's 30th Anniversary Edition Fly Like An Eagle). The October 6th stop at Los Angeles' Greek Theatre will mark the band's first concert in Los Angeles County in nearly a decade. Prior to the tour's kick-off, the band will play the 2nd Annual Matt's Promise Benefit Concert on May 16th in New York City. Matt's Promise is dedicated to making a difference in the lives of young people affected by cancer and other terminal illnesses (see http://www.mattspromise.org for further details).
One of the original jam bands, the Steve Miller Band emerged from San Francisco's summer of love with a sound that was distinctively different from its peers. Forty years hence, the band is still a mainstay of the summer concert season -- as fresh and vibrant as ever, melding rock, blues, jazz and pop in its own inimitable, improvisational style and attracting a fervent, multi-generational following. The band's songs have been recorded by a diverse group of artists that includes Smashing Pumpkins, deftones, Seal, Run-D.M.C. and k.d. lang.
With over four million albums sold to date, 1976's Fly Like An Eagle became the Steve Miller Band's biggest-selling studio album. (The band's Greatest Hits 1974-1978 has been certified 13-times Platinum.) Fly Like An Eagle spent nearly two years on the Billboard 200, peaking at #3 and yielding the Top 40 singles "Rock 'N Me," which was the band's second #1 single (following 1973's "The Joker"), the title track, which reached #2 on the pop charts and #20 on the R&B charts, and "Take the Money and Run," which peaked at #11. Last year's 30th Anniversary Edition Fly Like An Eagle served as both a potent reminder of the album's seminal place in rock history and the band's enduring live appeal.
"At the core is his prodigious talent, from his languid guitar playing to his vocal ease and purity of pitch, coupled with a seductive, lazy charm and his genius as a social commentator," said the San Francisco Chronicle. "This rerelease, with three bonus tracks and live 2005 concert DVD, shows how vital a performer Miller remains and how he presaged a generation of heartland rockers, from John Mellencamp to Tom Petty to Widespread Panic."
The Steve Miller Band's 2006 tour was one of the most successful in the band's history, attracting record crowds. Highlights included the headlining slot at Honolulu's Diamond Head Crater celebration. The band was one of the first groups to play inside the Crater in the 1970s and was honored to play at its first festival in decades. Earlier this year, the Steve Miller Band played a free show in New Orleans at the request of the New Orleans Saints. Over 30,000 attended the event and Miller sang the national anthem at the playoff game thereafter.
