Phish frontman: not guilty plea to drug charges

-- Phish frontman Trey Anastasio pled not guilty on Wednesday to drug possession in a Whitehall, N.Y surprise court.

According to Washington County D.A. Kevin Kortright the misdemeanor charges (which include driving under the influence of drugs) could escalate to felony charges because of the large quantities of prescription painkillers along with an anti-anxiety drug (neither of which were perscribed to Anastasio) found by police when they stopped Anastasio, whose car was weaving on a rural road last month.

Albany's WNYT News reported that some heroin was found in Anastasio's car and that he revealed to police that he was smoking hash and popping pills prior to the arrest, a part of the story that the D.A.'s office did not comment about.

Anastasio's next scheduled court appearance is 2/14 as he was freed on his own recognizance. In a written statement to fans he stated, "terrible about what happened last night, and I am deeply sorry for any embarrassment I have caused my friends, family and fans."
