Hello!
Welcome to March (well almost) - we have our final two shows of February before we move onto one of our busiest months ever w/ 32 shows (yikes!) . It all starts tomorrow (thu march 1st) with our best-friends-forever, DALEK who take to the stage at Johnny Brendas. Then we have one of the most interesting (aka the best) punk/hardcore bands playing the church on Friday (march 2nd) : F*#KED UP from Toronto will be playing with local hardcore favs COLD WORLD and the legendary 80s punk/hc outfit Y-DI from Philadelphia!

Later that evening (fri march 2nd) we have a great chapel (you know that seated room that only holds 50 people) show with MARISSA NADLER who has been getting a ton of blog/internet hype this week - she'll be playing behind two of philadelphia's finest psychy singer/songwriters : GREG WEEKS (from Espers) and RANDALL OF NAZARETH (from Pearls & Brass) . The following afternoon (sat march 3rd) we have an early afternoon matinee with the d.i.y / anti-folk princess KIMYA DAWSON (formerly of the moldy peaches)

Fans of Explosions In The Sky take note : On Sunday (march 4th) we have the instrumental outfit RED SPAROWES who feature members of Isis, Neurosis and Angel Hair - we dare to say that they are even bitter than EITS (in a different way) . We take a break for a day (thank god) and then on Tuesday (March 6th) we are happy to present one of the finest, smartest most "dead on" indie/pop/punk bands of 2006 - THE THERMALS who will make their First Unitarian Church debut (about time!). They got the big "internet nod" with a Pitchfork Best New Music slapped on their 2006 release which made most normal/smart/sane people's Top 10s list. Get Stoked !

Not much news to report. But we'll give you the heads up for shows that will definitely be selling out ! If you are interested in attending these shows next week, we recommend getting tickets for them ASAP.

* Next Wednesday March 7th - Clinic / Mahogany @ Johnny Brendas (less than 85 tix remain)
* Next Thursday March 8th - Of Montreal @ The Trocadero (less than 100 tix remain!)
* Next Friday March 9th -Mirah / The Blow @ The Church (less than 40 tix remain!)

Tickets are also selling fast for : F'ed Up (3/1) , Kimya Dawson (3/3), The Thermals (3/6) , Owen (3/27), Do Make Say Think (3/31), The Books (4/16) and Panda Bear (6/22) - so it's a good idea to also plan on getting tickets in advance to make sure you get in

2) SHOW PREVIEWS FOR THIS WEEKEND - Dalek / Marissa Nadler / Kimya / Red Sparowes

*TOMORROW* Thursday March 1st 9:00pm
At Johnny Brenda's (1201 Frankford Ave (Frankford & Girard Ave) In Philadelphia, PA)
21+ / $8 adv / $10 day of show / Tickets On Sale At R5Productions.com

Dalek
Not purely hip hop nor dub nor electronic nor noise. More like Public Enemy meets My Bloody Valentine or Mobb Deep meets Glenn Branca. They have collaborated with krautrock legends Faust, Techno Animal (ex-Godflesh), Kid 606, Zu, Velma and many other varied groups. Unlike most hip-hop groups, Dälek actually tour constantly. And they usually tour with bands that are also unclassifiable. Past tours with The Melvins, Jets To Brazil, Prince Paul, Isis, Dillinger Escape Plan, De La Soul, Tomahawk, Techno Animal, Pharcyde, Fantomas, and DJ Spooky. Dälek brings their own PA on tour, so it's pretty fucking loud.
Sound Clips : 1) Stagnant Water (new!) | 2) Eyes To Form Shadows | 3) Subversive Script (new!) | 4) Ever Somber

Destructo Swarmbots
Destructo Swarmbots' brilliant, dark noise follows the lead of composures like Cabaret Voltaire in creating sinister soundscapes that are powerful enough to evoke images of insects tunneling through dirt, of the bodies decaying beneath them and the untold stories of the world's darkest corners.
Sound Clips : 1) Cocaine Juggernaut | 2) Thorough, Retain | 3) Outward

Other Passengers
Dramatic and chaotic, at one moment they.re loud and unabashed, the next, they.re bizarrely spectral. Drawing on the post-punk psychedelic stylings of Can, Jawbox, Spaceman 3 and Sonic Youth, O.P. create a creepy sound pulled from the sad, deserted road of human emotion, and their live show is like a raw exorcism of desperation. But don't let us scare you away.
Sound Clips : 1) In The Belly | 2) Bank

Only the most progressive hip-hop could possibly earn the respect of Mike Patton, kid606 and the legendary kraut-rockers Faust. Dalek is also able to fit on bills alongside Dillinger Escape Plan and De La Soul, due to its unparalleled mix of avant-noise, IDM and leftfield rap. The duo's latest Ipecac LP, Abandoned Language (featuring cover art by Paul Romano of Mastodon fame!), is also one of their best, giving you the immediate sense that the world is going to shit quickly and not so quietly through mounting ambient effects that forsake feedback for clammy, skin-crawling textures. The new approach works so well that Dalek is able to get away with a 10-minute, towering title track that takes its time burrowing its way into your brain. "Turn the page motherfucker because your story's all scripted," indeed. Bring your earplugs: This one's gonna be like watching a beat-oriented, rhyme-slinging version of Wolf Eyes.

*THIS* Friday March 2nd 9:00pm
At The Chapel Room of The First Unit Church (2125 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, PA)
(small seated intimate space that only holds 50 people!)
All Ages / $8 advance / $10 day of show / Tickets On Sale At R5Productions.com

Marissa Nadler
Her songs delve into influences of old-timey americana folk, Portuguese fado, psychedelia, and country, the songwriting shines gently but is also gripping and unique. Nadler often evokes spirits by means of 12-string guitar fingerpicking and various vocal chorus arrangements.
Sound Clips : 1) Fifty Five Falls | 2) Under an Old Umbrella | 3) Mayflower May

Greg Weeks
Espers main frontman dude /songwriter. Folk melodies sung in hushes over fingerpicked acoustic guitar with an occasional hint of cello, piano, mellotron, organ and bass. Philly
Sound Clips : 1) Dusted | 2) Country At Night

Randall of Nazareth
Singer dude from Pearls & Brass. Solo show !

If you love gothic psych-folk, quietness, relaxing, Joanna Newsom, Mazzy Star, Keren Ann, long walks on the beach, Beach House, Vashti Bunyan, El Perro Del Mar, Mirah, Britta Persson, heroin, heroines, pandas and/or puppies, definitely go listen to (if you haven't already) some songs off of Marissa Nadler's unreleased (out March 12th), but already acclaimed, new album Songs III: Bird on the Water - easily her most varied and polished to date. Produced by Espers' Greg Weeks. You can do so at her her MySpace or at Gorilla Vs Bear or at Stereogum. Armed with little more than a 12-string guitar and her dusky mezzo-soprano, Marissa Nadler has cast quite a siren presence. Her exquisite ballads are steeped in Victorian Age melancholy and painterly lyricism.

Kimya Dawson
One of our most favoritest people! What will most likely be her last show in Philadelphia for a long time to come (due to the birth of her daughter). NYC anti-folk princess and MOLDY PEACHES member KIMYA DAWSON. She plays folk songs that embrace nostalgia, melancholy and sincerity, as she takes on subjects of love, growing up, growing old, Matlock, and Atari 2600s. K Records.
Sound Clips : 1) Tire Swing | 2) Underground | 3) My Heroes

It’s easy to mistake the Moldy Peaches for a pair of childish buffoons upon first listen or look; what with their weakness for middle school melodies (“Who’s Got the Crack?” and “Downloading Porn with Davo” immediately come to mind) and drama club costuming. But their music is much more than the wry work of Williamsburg ironists. Well, Kimya Dawson’s is at least. Rather than rely on irony, she writes songs as arresting and sincere as her own online journal (http://www.livejournal.com/users/kimya_dawson_/, in case you’re wondering). This candid approach could easily come off as self-deprecating, singer-songwriter romanticism to a gag-me degree. Dawson pulls it off by playing as if she just invited everyone over to her bedroom for an impromptu gig and vegan potluck dinner.

This is especially evident on Hidden Vagenda (K), which scraps her usual bare bedroom approach for multi-tracked sessions with family and friends (Regina Spektor, Daniel Johnston, Vanessa Carlton, Stephan Jenkins of Third Eye Blind, Brain of Primus/Guns ‘n’ Roses, her mother, and major players of New York’s anti-folk scene). Dawson remains the focal point no matter how storied her collaborators are from track to track. To be honest, it’s hard not to get sucked in while listening; hard not to feel both at ease and uneasy when her airy vocals are set to imagery of abuse and death, revelry and farce. One moment, she’s recalling a steamy summer afternoon (“It’s so hot you could fry an egg on top of the Pitbull humping my leg,” she rhymes over the chirping birds and blurting horns of “Parade”). The next she’s matching the clouds, drop for drop, with tears (“It’s Been Raining”).

If anything, and we mean this in the best way possible, Dawson is quietly becoming the Ani DiFranco of indie rock, from her improved songwriting to her increasingly political poetics. Her songs are easier to endure than DiFranco’s dogmatic tirades, though, because she comes off as more of a hero of the people than a pulpit pounder. Take “Viva la Persistence,” for example. Like DiFranco, she lets loose on the “giant corporations” who control the news. But instead of simply spewing venom we all share and hear enough about, she tempers her words with lighthearted jabs at Vanilla Coke, Lemon Pepsi and Friends DVDs. If you’re wondering whether this will all translate well live, take solace in the words of The Village Voice, who’ve covered the Moldy Peaches from the beginning and promise “Kimya will play the most moving set you’ve seen in a moon or more

Red Sparowes
Featuring members of Neurosis, Isis, Angel Hair, The VSS and Halifax Pier. Red Sparrows is great for fans of the post rock instrumental crowd. While we have some heavy psych rock feelings, there's also a hint of influence from Slowdive and My Bloody Valentine. After not listening to music for almost a week, Red Sparrows has me listening to, and wanting, slow burn-ish type of instrumental rock that is as equally beautiful as it is disturbing. Influenced by the more technical/layered side of Mogwai (than other similar bands ala Mono/Explosions In The Sky) who can explore space well without pedal stomping. Neurot Recordings.
Sound Clips : 1) We Stood Transfixed In Blank D | 2) Annihilate The Sparrpw | 3) the Great Leap Forward Poured

William Elliot Whitmore
Beautifully dark songs about life, love, loneliness and loss, delivered with Whitmore’s poignant lyrics and timeless, smoke-and-drink soured voice. Southern Records
Sound Clips : 1) Midnight | 2) The Chariot | 3) Cold And Dead

The family tree of Hydra Head and Neurot must be planted in some potent fertilizer because here we are again, examining the fresh buds of another branch. Red Sparowes counts Bryant Clifford Meyer and Jeff Caxide of Isis among its ranks, in a three-prong guitar attack alongside Josh Graham, Neurosis’ impress-the-stoners-up-front visuals guy.

Together they’re one of the greatest side projects to sit down, study and mimic the collected works of Godspeed You Black Emperor!, My Bloody Valentine and Mogwai. That’s not to say they’re simply derivative and, therefore, mere quiet/loud shadows of the real thing. Sparowes brings its own special motifs to every well-structured song, mostly through rippling country riffs, a stack of guitar pedals, shades of a sitar, and atmospheric effects that channel the whoosh of the wind, the chirping of birds, the creak of forgotten floorboards, and the distorted ramblings of stirred spirits that could’ve played a part in The Grudge.

Much like their post-rock predecessors, however, the Sparowes have no sense of how to edit their own work. So songs often bleed into one another like words off a page. Yet nothing comes off as repetitive or redundant. In a self-conscious move, they do provide literal song titles that explain how we should envision each passage, such as “Buildings begin to stretch wide across the sky and the air filled with a reddish glow.” Make no mistake: Red Sparowes is as self-indulgent as most other side projects, but it’s also more interesting than most bands. So slip away for a second and we’ll meet you on the other side.
