[R5] THERMALS * CLINIC * DAUGHTERS * 120 DAYS * MAGIK MARKERS

Hellos !
Holy shit! This week is awesome - I kind of forgot how stacked it was! There are so many awesome shows this week. Not soo much news (we think that's a good thing) - so we'll just get info whats going down this week. We do this newsletter with show previews every week so you can find out more about the bands playing. Make sure to fully read the previews below - we are quite fond of them !

We start it off on Tuesday (march 4th) with indie/punk/pop heroes - THE THERMALS who are one of the few bands that EVERY staff members, top to bottom absolutely loves - they play alongside THE A SIDES and Brooklyn's BIG SLEEP. Later that very same evening (tuesday march 4th) the much hyped UNDER BYEN from Denmark play their most intimate show in the US at Johnny Brendas.

On Wednesday (march 5th) Radiohead's favorite bands' CLINIC play their first Philly show in years on the debut of their new album which just recently came out in the states. They'll be joined by the HOLY FUCK (a band who plays electronic music via all these insane instruments like a film projector) as well as MAHOGANY who were all over a bunch of best of 2006 lists and just scored the opening slot on Bloc Party's upcoming European tour. Talk about your stacked line ups! If you like your rock a bit more punky and weird - that same evening - we have grindy new wave kids DAUGHTERS hitting the church with the ex-Arab on Radar led CHINESE STARS.

Not to be content with just two double header evenings we get into double trouble again on Thursday (march 8th) with one of the latest additions to our wonderful Philadelphia local scene - GENGHIS TRON are playing with KYLESA along with kind of locals - ULTRA DOLPHINS and the new-ish JAVELINA comprised of former members of Endless Nightmare, Lick Golden Sky and Dead Meat. At the same time OF MONTREAL come back to Philadelphia at The Trocadero - but that show is sold out - so you'll just have to make fun of them for the Outback Steakhouse song next time..

What - what is wrong with us? Why did we book 4 double headers in a row- must have been all that meth that Leftover Crack gave us on Friday. On Friday (march 9th) bring your ear plugs to Johnny Brendas as new england noise-rockers MAGIK MARKERS come to town alongside the sonic brutality of Alletown's AIR CONDITIONING as well as local favorites OSPREYS and SATANIZED. On the complete opposite side of the spectrum we get all girl power with MIRAH and THE BLOW on Friday at The Church- which sold out way in advance - so, who cares!

We take a breather on Saturday and head off to go dance like idiots to Simian Mobile Disco in NY to come back the following evening to Johnny Brendas on Sunday (march 11th) with the electronic rock by Norway's 120 DAYS and SHOUT OUT OUT OUT OUT (yes that's 4 outs). When you add it all up, we get arguably our 2nd finest week EVER (only behind last years 10 yr anniv week)

The Big Sleep
The Brooklyn-based trio bangs out muscular avant-rock textures with a totally bonkers Mick Fleetwood bugeye drummer who did those Zep things Dom Leone loves and a guitarist as content to hash out blues riffs (over bassist Sonya Balchandani's teutonic drone) as ear-splitting electronic noise. French Kiss Records. Sound Clips :
1) Murder | 2) Untouchable | 3) Sleepy Kid Waltz

The A-Sides
Appealing to the record-collector and indie-kid sensibilities that keep everyone from Marshall Crenshaw and Brian Wilson to Big Star and The Apples in Stereo in business, marching through a wonderland full of all the typical psychedelic-pop touchstones. From Philly ! Sound Clips :
1) Cinematic | 2) Sidewalk Chalk | 3)Park Avenue

Hey, remember that kick-ass record the Thermals released last year (it made it to the top 20 albums of Picthfork's touted best of 2006 list). Well, whether you do or not, the Thermals are making sure no one has the chance to miss them play songs from it live - best of all: unlike last fall's jaunt that had our trusty Thermals playing second banana to Emomaha's Cursive and that band's black-haired, black-hearted minions, this little adventure has the hard-working Sub Pop trio headlining the smallish, dingy dives they were born to play, in front of the crowds they've been dying to sweat all over. And they'll be joined by Frenchkissers the Big Sleep for most dates. So come out, bring your friends, and for crissakes people, move around! Thermals bassist Kathy Foster in a recent MySpace post. "Let's make it GREAT, ok?! Get your juices flowing too! don't put off what you wanna do any longer." Chew on that, kiddies.

The first few seconds of the Thermals' album tells you every thing you need to know with just one muffled, distant sound: a church organ. You might expect the conciseness, but not the cleverness of such a move from singer/guitarist Hutch Harris, who continually flogs his band's music with phrases like "three chords," "two minutes," and "punk rock." Still, the band has made enough baby steps that this album, their third overall, is a true accomplishment. Harris' lyrics flaunt paranoia over our country's potentially Christian-fueled fascist future, while somehow maintaining his impish sense of humor throughout. This is straight POP PUNK - no not that west coast fat records stuff - this is genius "up the system" intelligent rock music - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Fryda Hyvönen
Frida Hyvönen is a Swedish pianist with a bent for twinkling flurries of notes slamming into clanging, chunky chords-- periodic ticks of dissonance tucked into harmonies. Like her piano playing, her voice is capable of almost spontaneous dynamic magic. Sometimes she howls; other times she performs in a near-whisper.

What with all the chatter about Sweden on this internet, it's easy to forget that other Scandinavian nations made a serious Stateside splash in 2006 (an indie-sized splash, but still,,,). Among them: Denmark, who graced us with Pitchfork faves Figurines and Mew, as well as Under Byen (pronounced : Oh'nah Boon"), who've been kicking it for a while now and released Samme Stof Som Stof (Paper Bag Records) last year to exceptionally positive reviews. The octet-- comprised of four boys and four girls, which means they'll kick your band's ass at square dancing-- finally makes its way to the U.S. and Philadelphia, playing a spate of shows throughout March What's more, they're bringing along one hell of a secret weapon in their quest for Scandinavian domination: Sweden's potty-mouthed chanteuse Frida Hyvönen, sharing coy, heartfelt balladry from her 2006 U.S. re-release, Until Death Comes (Secretly Canadian).

Under Byen has been reaping accolades in their stomping grounds since 1998, when they began releasing their elaborate post-rock, which sounds like Björk and Mogwai falling down a well together. North America, as it is wont to do with non-English-singing bands, has been slower on the uptake, tentatively joining in the general apeshit-ness when David Fricke (rolling stone editor) , in 2003, called Under Byen the best band in the world. Well, we'll be honest - Under Byen aren't the best band in the world, but they're very good. It actually sounds like they're straining toward being the Animal Collective of Mogwais, imbuing those dark, grand structures with weird shambles and Henriette Sennenvaldt's uncanny chirping. Going lighter on the guitar than many of their post-rock peers, Under Byen center their songs around wobbly pianos, melting strings, and shaggy percussion. They thread thin, sneaky melodies through shape-shifting veils of fog. S"amme Stof Som Stof's" sound palette is a vivid and varied range of grays and blues; each song is like some giant machine on the verge of shuddering apart.

The Holy Fuck
No computers, midi, drum machines, electronics. All live, experimental, improv with a bunch of dudes wigging out on toy keyboards and the 35 mm film synchronizer - a film editing device which has never before been used as an instrument. An even goofier and more garishly colorful Out Hud, Holy Fuck blasts out opulent streams of saturated melody, clouds of glitter and confetti, nitrous-boosted dance dynamics.
Sound Clips :
1) Tone Bank Jungle | 2)Tone Bank Computer

Mahogany
With ears in the past, an eye on the future, and hindsight a perfect 20/20, Brooklyn's Mahogany plays a bracing, chilly, dream-pop. At once ethereal, motorik, and densely rhythmic -- rolling up shoegaze, light Goth pop, Phil Spector's wall of sound, Krautrock, and Factory-starched post-punk into a clean, pure white snowball, which is then never thrown. Buzzing with strings, electronic pulses, and crystalline guitar lines, then leavened by clear, angelic boy-girl vocals (all captured excellently by members of the band, with help from the Cocteau Twins' Robin Guthrie). This is science pop for enlightened minds, lightly, gently, rapidly flashing before you.
Sound Clips :
1) Supervitesse | 2) Neo Plastic Boogie Woogie

The Dr. Giggles comparisons are inescapable. Sorry guys, but it's hard not to think "homicidal health care provider" when you perform in surgical masks and elaborate drama club costumes, gleefully desecrating garage rock's bloated corpse with scalpel-sharp surf guitars and a snaky, funereal procession of harmoniums, melodicas, woodwinds and eerie effects pedals. Just look at the bassist in the back (Brian Campbell) –– the one that keeps shaking it like a seizure and hooting like an owl in heat. He's downright creepy on vintage Clinic cuts like "If You Could Read Your Mind" and "Gideon." As for whether or not the group's new album (Visitations, Domino) veers from the same old-same old sound of the past three Clinic albums, the answer is not really. The band still comes off like a nightmarish, claustrophobic reading of the garage rock series Back from the Grave –– the kind of thing that could score a chase scene deep in the heart of a haunted forest, one that could only end very, very badly.

Normal Love
Stoking the community since '06, NORMAL LOVE is a Philadelphia based quintet comprised of amplified violin, two electric guitars, electric bass, and drum set. Their music generally has a loud and brutal aesthetic with compositional influences ranging from african minimalism to serialism to death metal, but rarely within the same piece.

You’ll have to excuse Alexis Marshall for a moment; he’s been drinking for most of the afternoon and isn’t about to censor himself in the slightest. Hell, we’ve been in Marshall’s position before, halfway between a six pack and slitting our ears from cheek to cheek after one too many grindcore albums with more effort put into the song titles than the actual songwriting. "We’re pretty sure people are upset we didn’t write another 12-song, 10-minute album with a bunch of blast beats and stu pid song titles,” says Marshall, reacting to the predictable backlash that’s already flooded their Myspace page in light of the Jon Spencer Spazz Explosion LP, Hell Songs (Hydra Head). “I hate going onstage, playing a song for 25 or 30 seconds, stopping, and then doing another one. It’s the same fucking song. You can’t tell the difference you know?”

Amen. We’d be lying if we said we dug the mangled, best-appreciated-live mess that was Daughters’ last LP, Canada Songs (Robotic Empire). As creepy and kooky as the riffs were, Marshall might as well have been screaming “Rarr, rarr/blargh, blargh” in the background, since it’d be impossible to tell the difference under even the closest scrutiny. “I Don’t Give a Shit About Wood, I’m Not a Chemist” was a decent track title, though. Actually, a confession is in order … “I didn’t sing any words to 90 percent of Canada Songs, which is so lame,” explains Marshall. “I don’t even remember what the hell I wrote on that record anymore. It was such an easy way out, you know? Screaming is obnoxious. I’m tired of it.” (note : R5 the band did this way before they did)

The surprise on Hell Songs isn’t a 180 switch to squeegee-ed singing; it’s much more bizarre, a bluesy, snaky and snarky droll that fits the halfway house sex vibe of Daughters’ shows. Marshall actually begins the record by naming the misconceptions that have been cast in his direction before, among them sinner, wrongdoer, evildoer, miscreant, the devil incarnated and our personal favorite, “a good for nothing, ass-fucking, son of a bitch.” All the while, the band retains a familiar Daughters backdrop of guillotine guitars and gut-smacking drums. Except for the compact noise experiment “Providence By Gaslight,” which climaxes in a cloudburst of violins, trumpets and upright bass lines provided by members of Kayo Dot. “There’s no way to half-ass listen to this record,” says Marshall. “When it’s heavy, it’s heavy, and when it’s weird it’s annoying as hell. Basically, I want to weed out all of the fuck heads who were here just to socialize and be seen. I could come out and say I love everyone, but that’s bullshit. I despise phonies—they’re all made of paper mache and I hope they fucking die.”

Shout Out Out Out Out
Woah! Super blog mania! Two drummers + four bass players + two samplers + five synthesizers + five cowbells + two octapads + one vocoder. Shout out out out out plays volatile dance music, leaving jaws dropped and dance floors filled with their chaotic blend of epic bumpin'. Hell yes, let us do the electro rock and dance the night away. Forecast for this Sunday In Philly : heavy synth-rock with a chance of norwegian hipster haircuts. The groove-riding Norwegians in 120 Days Kraut rock like they Can Can Can (get it?) on their self-titled Vice debut, a black light-draped, Joy Division on Superman pills collection of dance jams that'll pull you in like a whirlpool. They build towering edifices that seem a breath away from toppling. But those structures never topple, thanks to the band's deft hands and measured pace, not to mention the loaded deck from which they're drawing: New Order synths doppler over Kraftwerk's motorik throb. Primal Scream's propulsive electro-rock tangles with Neu!'s gridded tableaux and Ådne Meisfjord's Bonoesque voice. If it sounds overstated, it is-- these guys go big on everything, from the long transitions to the incandescent crescendos. They just walked away from this year's Spellemannprisen (the Norwegian Grammys) with two awards in hand-- one for Best Rock Album, and one for Best New Artist.

Live, they drone on in a way the cool kids can appreciate, replacing the low, rumbling bass tones of Sunn O))) with a laser-guided synth attack and cucumber cool vocals. They'll be fitting an bscene amount of equipment on the tiny stage of Johnny Brendas, but dont worry - they put it all to good use, riding their electro-motorik highway into space. Apparently the band members are far more animated than we anticipated (so says the interweb) ; from the sound of their ultra-cool record, we expected these guys to be wearing sunglasses and leather jackets and to not move from one fixed spot. Instead, they wear schoolboy sweaters and engage in unabashed head banging, frantic swaying, and running in place !

Oh by the way, Philly's own Dave P just remixed these guys, so be on the lookout for that in your local record bin soon !
