[R5] Acid Mothers Temple * Kill Your Idols * Chromelodeon / El-P * Pipettes * Arch In Helsinki

Hellos -
It's officially summer now - we busted out our staff uniforms (camo shorts and/or cut off pants) and are ready to spend many of lovely evening chilling outside of the church. This is our last super busy week for awhile as we are going take it easy for the next few months (aka not do 30+ shows in a month). Thanks to everyone who came out to the shows last week - especially the sold out performances for The Books and Spoon (both bands had an awesome time and were totally stoked on Philly)

This week we have the legendary japanese crazy sonic assault freakout ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE tomorrow (wednesday april 25th) playing w/ their new female vocalist for the first time ever in Philadelphia at The First Unitarian Church. On Friday (april 27th) we host the last show ever for epic video game inspired composers CHROMELODEON who will be supported by HAIL SOCIAL. Speaking of last shows ever - Saturday hardcore matinees are back - the following afternoon on Saturday (april 28th) - KILL YOUR IDOLS will play their final show ever in Philadelphia with the reunited GO FOR THE THROAT which will take place at The First Unitarian Church at 3:00pm.

Later that evening (sat april 28th) we have the not once, but twice anointed Pitchfork Best New Music 2007 band - DEERHUNTER playing Johnny Brendas. We made it a point to check them out at SXSW and it was by FAR one of the better bands we saw (possibly the best?) . Totally weird yet melodic drugged out indie rock (along the lines of Spaceman 3) smothered in gorgeous melodies in effects-laden squall. Trust us on this !

We also added three serious primetime shows for June. Like heavy, heavy, real deal players. We have the super internet blogged, and pitchfork hyped - THE PIPETTES from the UK - playing their first show ever In Philadelphia at The First Unitarian Church on June 3rd. The amazing ten plus member indie pop orchestra from Australia - ARCHITECTURE IN HELSINKI returns to Philadelphia on Sat June 9th at The Starlight Ballroom after supporting Clap Your Hands And Say Yeah and a bunch of other gigantic bands recently. Rounding out the new shows - we have one of our favorite artists ever - the infamous hip hop producer, legendary underground mc and record label mogul - EL-P will be making his first Philadelphia appearance in almost 3 years. His new full length album feature collaborations with Nine Inch Nails, Tv On The Radio, Mars Volta, Cat Power, Aesop Rock, and Matt Sweeny from Chaves. This will begin a whole new era in "hip-hop". El-P will be bringing along a full band with tons of electronics and live instruments and a multimedia video show. This is going to be intense! It's going down on Tuesday June 12th and we are going to keep it an intimate affair at The First Unitarian Church. Tickets for all three shows are

Acid Mothers Temple
We bring you one of the most prolific bands of the 90s and 00s with Japan's ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE who have recorded over three dozen records and like eight bazillion singles. One of the few "hippie" bands that are cool to like. Is it because they act like the are from outerspace ? Is it because they were on the cover of Wire Magazine ? Is it because they speak the worst English ever and it's cute when they talk to the crowd - Well probably - but we hope to think it's mostly because these guys play balls to wall-freak the fuckout-insaneo psych rock and roll. From heavy Hawkwind-style rock jams to gentle ambient drift, it's all here, and it's all sooo very psychedelic. They create noises and sounds that shoudln't even be possible from a single guitar. While we joke about how many records these hairies release, we also always have to perk up and pay attention when there's a new AMT opus. Cause most of the time, they're well worth hearing. The new live band fetaures - Tabata Mitsuru (Zeni Geva, Boredoms), Shimura Koji (Miminokoto, High Rise, Mainliner) and Okano Futoshi (Ghost) alongside AMT stalwarts "dancin' king" Higashi Hiroshi and "speed guru" Kawabata Makoto

Mammatus
Whoa, heavy!! This is a whole-body vibrating, brain-melting, serious amplifier worship ceremony! Hairy backwoods hippy dudes, the drummer wears what looks to be a home-made Whysp t-shirt, guitars turning the air to cottage cheese a la Blue Cheer while creating a trance-zone worthy of Finland's Circle!! Loud, massive and mesmerizing, swirling sludge psych! Their songs, often of epic length, are ever chugging skyward, dripping molten goo, full of feedback and fx. Mammatus belong in the company of such bastions of cosmic heaviness as Sleep, Boris, YOB, UFOmammut, Earthless, old Monster Magnet, Acid Mothers Temple (at AMT's heaviest, like on Starless & Bible Black Sabbath), Tarantula Hawk, and even Amon Duul (especially on the druggy, krautrocky jam "The Outer Rim"). Highly recommended. Holy Mountain Records.

Yep it's like the Japanese all star tour.

It’s not often where you get to experience a genuine overwhelming spectacle live—especially in the confines of an underground church hall —but you can pretty much expect it every time we get a visit (and there aren’t many) . AMT's original idea was to subvert songs in ‘70s prog-rock (Tangerine Dream and other stuff that makes you want to reach for a pipe with a quickness) and Kraut stuff like Can. All we can say is they really are approaching something special lately, as evidenced in a recent Allmusic.com review that stated “this band is at its peak right now, taking its music to new places, spaces, and dimensions, and should be paid careful attention to before it completely lifts off.” Loping, slumbrous, gentle, melancholic, blissful, hazy - we invite you to come "get weird" at this show.....

Deerhunter
This band from Atlanta is sure to create quite a stir this year with their sophomore release and their first outing for Kranky. It already snagged a "Best New Music" from Pitchfork and the critics cant seem to get enough. As influenced by blissed out and spacey drones as they are rocking momentum and pop sensibility, it's kind of like an early Factory band doing covers of songs from the first couple U2 records. We could see this creating the same kind of refreshing splash that Broken Social Scene did a few years back as this is a record with enough texture to reel in more experimental minded folks but with enough pizzaz and sleek rock moments to win over the indie-rock crowd. Really good!
1) Cryptograms | 2) Strange Lights | 3) Heatherwood

Pterodactyl
Hyper-rhythmic, skull-cracking hard post-punk trio, playing with laser-guided precision, telegraphing impossible changes, it's as if someone plugged these guys into the nearest available wall socket and flipped the on switch. Lightning Bolt is somewhat of an apt comparison, though they don't waste time with jamming. Les Savy Fav might be too, if that band was as good as people think they are. This is a different beast, on their way to forming an original and completely engrossing sound on their own. It's heavy and brilliant too, if that helps. From Brooklyn. Jagjaguwar Records.

The Selmanaries
Ambitious, exotic, dancy, potent-but-still-spacious rock music from Atlanta. On tour with Deerhunter.
Sound Clips : Check Out The Selmanaries's Myspace Page

Atlanta's DEERHUNTER will be visiting Philadelphia since the internet and music press fell in love with them (long time r5 show go'ers may remember they played with Lighting Bolt a few years back at the South Philly Anatehuum). Aternately murky and ethereal, amorphous and incisive, shot through with Sonic Youth guitar squall, Spacemen 3's blissful hymns, the morbidly introspective drum sounds of early Factory Records productions, and the abstract sonic richness of Harold Budd's collaborations with Brian Eno. Has the term neo-shoegaze already been coined? I don’t really care either way, but it’s probably the most efficient way to categorize Deerhunter, the deliriously ragged and sometimes psychedelic group who have just released their mighty fine Kranky debut, Cryptograms.

Deerhunter are what garrulous music critics have come to call “art damaged,” which translates to: white kids with mod dos emulating yesterday’s junkie rock with a delay pedal or 10. After checking them out live - I came to realize that there’s a lot more going on here than borrowed bohemia. The total lack of farty dance jamz is an added bonus.Cryptograms is a tonal wash of brisk speed kicks and seasick comedowns, the kind of thing you could lose an afternoon to. I’m already missing several: I’d pop in the disc and find myself some time later with a patch of drool on my sleeve and the feeling that I should check for my wallet. Then I’d play it again. The basslines evoke cold sweats; the guitars are a cross between narcotic bliss and toxic shock. The vocals are nigh indistinguishable, but they sound suitably pained. Either these kids need an intervention, or they’re the most promising crew of anemic sound scuttlers since MBV.
