Jana Hunter
We caught a fleeting introductory glimpse of Ms Jana Hunter recently when she appeared on a split LP with Mr. Devendra Banhart. We were immediately struck by just how much her voice bore a striking resemblance to his. In fact, we had to double-check to make sure it was indeed her singing. Now on her own on this full length collection of her music from the past ten years (but still in the company of Banhart in other ways, this was released on the new label he runs with Andy Cabic of Vetiver), does that still hold true or was it simply a proximity issue? Well, we can say that although Ms Jana Hunter does occasionally affect a peculiarly familiar, charming lilt when she sings, she does sound quite a bit different (from both Banhart and herself on that split release), but not incongruously so. The first song "All The Best Wishes" has an aged recording sound that brings her closer to Jolie Holland in old tymey feel (this haunted, echo-y feel resurfaces later on in the tenth song "The Angle"), but her actual performance also recalls Cat Power's Chan Marshall in its achingly personal intimacy. Quite a first impression. Not at all unexpectedly, Blank Unstaring Heirs Of Doom nestles in well alongside the neo-folk works of Banhart, Holland, Vetiver, Cocorosie and Joanna Newsom... and Cat Power too. Be sure to stick around for the closing track "K". It's a casiotone-y sweetie!

Bees & The Birds
Chrissy likes girls. Josh likes girls too. They are in a band together that plays music that is fun and honest. The band is called the bees and the birds. The band blends good times, rock N roll, banjos, slide guitars, and cute guy/girl tradeoffs into one giant bowl of tasty awesomeness. Philly. Sound Clips :

Texan songstress and Gnomonsong signee Jana Hunter will cast off the shackles of domesticity on her sophomore disc, There's No Home, heading to the buyer's market April 2. Fans of the strummy stuff may recall "Farm, CA," the Hunter tune stuck in the mangy beard that was the Devendra Banhart-curated Golden Apples of the Sun freak folk showcase record, as well as her own well-received 2005 effort Blank Unstaring Heirs of Doom. Recorded at a friend's home in Houston, There's No Home packs plenty of the cathedral-ceiling harmonies, finger-plucked acoustic guitars, and freeform song structure you've come to expect from the freak-folkies. Guest-turns on the record are slim given the collective's tendency towards collaboration, but Jana's brother John Hunter contributes a few vocals, and John Adams of the Fatal Flying Guilloteens and Matt Brownlie of Bring Back the Guns handle a few instrumental duties.

John Vanderslice
The seemingly tireless John Vanderslice keeps 'em coming. Continuing to do that which he does exceptionally well, Mr. Vanderslice has made several albums of his distinct, intelligent indie pop tunes. His music is at once expansive yet still very down to earth w/ distinct achingly pretty, soaring melodies and lush array of instrument arrangements. Splendid! Barsuk Records.

1) Exodus Damage | 2) Trance Manual | 3) Pale Horse | 4) They Wont Let Me Run

St. Vincent
St. Vincent is the band of singer-multi-instrumentalist-composer, Annie Clark. Hailed by the Boston Globe as an, 'adorably spunky guitar prodigy,' 23 year-old Annie has been seen opening for such acclaimed and diverse acts as Television, Jose Gonzalez, and will spend the next few weeks supporting Sufjan Stevens all across Europe. An inventive and versatile guitarist, Annie has played with avant-garde composer, Glenn Branca, and is a member of symphonic pop spectacle, The Polyphonic Spree.
Sound Clips : Check Out St Vincent's Myspace Page

People John Vanderslice has aided or abetted in the studio, often at his Tiny Telephone headquarters: Nada Surf, Spoon, Death Cab For Cutie, Beulah, Mates of State, and Philly’s own Mountain Goats.

Reasons why his own records rule, especially his last one, Pixel Revolt: He uses concept records to explore complex characters and dense arrangements, featuring tape tweaking, timpani rolls, clanging guitars, the occasional cello, choice loops, the occasional organ, and perfectly placed percussion patterns. We’re talking deep, dark stuff too, from stories about a murder investigation to four tracks that comment directly or subversively about September 11 and its post-patriot paranoia––all while coming off poppy and constantly inventive (he is a veteran indie producer, after all).

Opening the show is St Vincent aka singer and multi-instrumentalist Annie Clark She has signed to Beggars Banquet to release her debut album, Marry Me, on July 10 in the U.S. The 23-year old is a veteran guitar slinger in two musical armies, the Polyphonic Spree and Sufjan Stevens' touring band. Her debut album Marry Me, however, features Clark front and center with just a few contributions from longtime David Bowie pianist Mike Garson and Man or Astro-man? drummer Brian Teasley. It also features the greatest song title we've heard so far this year: "Jesus Saves, I Spend".

David Vandervelde and the Moonstation House Band
Bearing an immediate resemblance to Marc Bolan and David Bowie, deeper listening rewards the listener with a much broader musical universe. His debut album - Moonstation House Band captures the highlights from his two-year immersion in Jay Bennett's Clubhouse--as Vandervelde refers to the studio in Chicago--where he isolated himself to record this record virtually on his own, using the former Wilco multi-instrumentalist's studio as a big toy instrument. Self-taught on guitar, drums, bass, piano, synth, and other studio tools, the listener can hear that Vandervelde is an adventurous artist, who embraces classic rock songwriting and whose spirit is just banging at the door to get unleashed. Seriously he is AMAZING. Secretly Canadian.
Sound Clips :
1) Jacket | 2) Nothing No | 3) Wisdom From A Tree

Richard Swift and the Sons of National Freedom
Richard Swift has confidently composed yet another original masterpiece; employing an archaic attitude of tempered restraint on a fresh collection of ten songs, without appearing shamelessly retro or kitschy. Playing a vast majority of the instruments on his new album - Dressed Up himself, by virtue Swift has created something that is characteristically his. And considering his rough-around-the-edges exterior, one could rightly assume that Swift desires the listener to accept him as an ordinary honest man with some honest songs--unmasked blemishes and all. Yet when one engages with Swift on this narrow-road-less-traveled, one immediately ignores the subtle imperfections shadowed by the all-consuming white light of well-crafted pop songs in an analog heaven. Secretly Canadian.
Sound Clips :
1) Kisses For The Misses | 2) Songs Of Natural Freedom | 3) Ps. It All Falls Down

Gratuitously-lengthy band names shall reign supreme when the glammy grace and thunderous Technicolor riffage of Moonstation House Band-leader David Vandervelde meets Dressed Up for the Letdown fashion-plate Richard Swift and his Sons of National Freedom in Philadelphia on Wed April 18th at Johnny Brendas. . Both Secretly Canadian artists have still-warm albums and white-hot shortform releases to plug. Let's explore, shall we? Vandervelde will release Moonstation's leadoff track "Nothin' No" as a single June 19, backed by a take on the twinkly "Feet of a Liar" from his hour in the Daytrotter booth, a new one called "Cute Pretender", and the probably wordless "Dancing Sea Gulls Instrumental". May 22, Swift's "Kisses for the Misses" will find itself trapped inside a seven-inch-wide ring of plastic, surrounded by "Cowboy Song #6" and a cover of Prince's "Paisley Park".

Much like his double-threat treatise, The Novelist/Walking Without Effort, Richard Swift retains his peanut butter-smooth acoustic roots on his latest LP, Dressed Up for the Letdown. The playfulness of "The Songs of National Freedom" reflects the summer charm of Chicago's "Saturday in the Park." The electro-acoustic "Buildings in America" is reminiscent of Hall and Oates, torn right from their ’80s songbook. And "Kisses for the Misses" is every danceable pop tune the Scissor Sisters have tried to rip off and failed at miserably.

As for David Vandervelde, well, the very title of his debut full-length pretty much tells his story. (The Moonstation House Band, if you must know, which indeed tosses a bit of Ziggy Stardust in the eyes of the Beatles and that Bolan guy, along with other ‘60s pop mavericks like the Stones.) . He sounds EXACTLY like Mark Bolan - and thats a good thing.
