[R5] Low * RJD2 * Junior Boys * Locust * Erase Eratta + Silversun Pickups !

Hellos !
We have no idea how it got to be April already - everything is moving so fast! We have 19 shows left for this month before things slow down a little bit for the summer months. We are going to take it a little bit easier (as opposed to last year) and try and enjoy the weather (instead of being cooped up indoors every single day). We'll see how it goes. But enough worrying about weeks/months down the line. We have a ton to get to this week !

Tonight (monday april 9th) we have long-time R5 favorites LOW who are touring with LONEY, DEAR which are one of those "big deal" swedish pop bands who are getting lots of hype here in the states. We havent seen them (or heard any reports yet) - but their debut album is totally awesome (if you are into the Belle and Sebastian kind of thing) . On Wednesday (april 11th) at the Starlight Ballroom we are proud to present the Philadelphia/Hometown debut of RJD2's new live full band - who perform all of the old favorites (with live instrumentation) as well as the new songs that he just released on XL Records. Smarty pants California rapper BUSDRIVER opens up the show - we have a real interesting unusual "non-hiphop" interview with him below. Later that same evening (wed april 11th) tt's "Ladies First" at Johnny Brendas (as Queen Latifah would say) with ERASE ERATTA and the female led Philly band GANG and PONY PANTS.

On Thursday (april 12th) - THE JUNIOR BOYS are coming to town at The First Unitarian Church. One of the few bands (only?) to get Top 10 / Best New Music nods in both Pitchfork and Wire Magazine for BOTH of their albums. These guys seriously create some amazing chilled out r&b pop that makes us (well more like - me) dance around in our pj's at 4am late at night. On the other side of the spectrum you have hyper-spazz-grind kings THE LOCUST who havent played Philly in some time - they return to the First Unitarian Church on Sunday (april 15th) alongside like minded DAUGHTERS and CATTLE DECAPITATION.

We also added a TON of new shows included the first proper headlining show for THE SILVERSUN PICKUPS who made their Philadelphia debut just a few months ago. After a small show at The First Unitarian Church in August (that 50 people were at) - The Silversun Pickups began to catch MEGA hype - landing spots on all sorts of tours, appearing on every single late night sow and even somehow catching my parents attention. I'll go as far to say that they are by far our favorite "rock" band right now - that have this sort of "cooler" Smashing Pumpkins vibe going on. They'll be here Monday May 14th at The Trocadero Theater and tickets are on sale now !

We also have new shows for THE ALBUM LEAF, MONO, FROG EYES, THE ROSEBUDS, DATAROCK, CALVIN JOHNSON, BERT JANSCH, LAVENDER DIAMOND and much much more check it out below in the calendar section. There also is the much anticipated Making Time this Saturday (april 14th) at Transit (not Pure) w/ THE KLAXONS (who are like the king-shit band in England right now) as well as the best live dance band SOULWAX which of course features 2MANYDJs who will be spinning through the late night. Details on that are below. And as we are sure you know by now all this week is the Philadelphia Popped festival featuring tons of local bands including the big headlining show on Friday (april 13th) with DR DOG / THE SPINTO BAND / BARDO POND and ILLINOIS at The Starlight Ballroom. Details on all of that can be found in the "Other Events" section of the calendar below.

Finally we just want to give you a heads up that both THE BOOKS (april 16th) and SPOON (april 22nd) shows will likely sell out in the next day or two. If you are interested in attending either or both shows - get your tickets ASAP !

Low
One of our favorite bands ! Slow down, and then slow down some more. Low continues their drifting, melodic caress toward moody eternal slumber with a new drone of heaven sent, relaxed-fit depressives. Gorgeous and angelic-kissed reverie, with newly added stretches of drum throb and bass-ended feedback to propel the dream further. Diverse and painless songs that cut simply but effectively through heart-strings and nervous-systems, leaving an absorbed and beautiful corpse in their wake. Kranky/Sub Pop Records

Loney, Dear
One of those new next big shit hype bands from Sweden! It's band like this (and furniture brands like Ikea) that make us think everything from Sweden is adorable and fragile. Loney, Dear, like close companions Peter Bjorn and John, have a symmetrical attention to detail that makes each song crisp, but just a little hard to touch. So tiny and delicate you could carry it in cupped hands. Everything is on the quiet: brushed drumbeats, glockenspiel tings, just a touch of farty, under-the-table bass flowing like line-hung linen in a breeze, even throughout the ominously vacant middle expanses and the squalling climaxes. We love them. Sub Pop Records.

Will someone please say something? Or at the very least play a goddamn chord or drum beat that doesn't resemble a death march? Because we feel a little uncomfortable at the moment, hanging by a thread in one of the many voids that populate the pioneering slowcore music of Low. Since 1994, the brooding husband and wife duo of Alan Sparhawk (guitarist/vocalist) and Mimi Parker (drummer/vocalist) have struck a brooding, beautiful middleground between the endless sonic soliloquies of drone architects and the sweeping soundscapes of shoegazers. Galaxie 500, Spacemen 3, Codeine and other classic emotional wrecks are referenced in Low songs, but their sound remains their own despite a growing line of imitators. And lately it’s evolved into something more, drifting from the expected slowcore taffy template of teasing and tension to expansive orchestrations of distorted drums, synth washes, grinding organs and big guitars. The group achieved this partially by hiring Flaming Lips/Mogwai producer Dave Fridmann for their last two LPs. The whole transformation is something they’ve hinted at for a while, though, and to be fair Low has always been great at choosing the right producer to capture their sound (like, oh, Steve Albini). So expect nothing but transcendence when Low plays the Church this evening.

RJD2
"I've gone rap free in 2006," claimed RJD2 and instead of the sampledelic hip-hop/electronica of previous albums Deadringer and Since We Last Spoke, the new album was recorded with live instrumentation played entirely by RJ himself. He wanted "to make pop music. The same shit everybody listens to: the Beatles, your Led Zeppelins, your Tears for Fears. And there are new groups: Elliott Smith or Dungen or Queens of the Stone Age. These are all groups that I feel make-- at the end of the day-- pop music. They do it with their own flavor and their own thing." But don't get too scared - despite the claim in his interview that Third Hand was a pop album, we're still hearing a lot of hip hop on his new album "The Third Hand" - syncopated drums, clipped vocal coos, and tinkling background electronics. Check out the sound clips below and see what you think. RJ will be performing with a live band as well as his normal 4 turntable + electronics live set. XL recordings.

Busdriver
Out of the legendary Project Blowed crew, Busdriver has carved a niche in underground hip hop with unique performance and freestyle skills that combine elements of vocal jazz, theatrics, spoken word, and machine precision with witty and incisive free association lyrics. A frequent collaborator with many of Los Angeles's hip hop elite, Busdriver has worked with Aceyalone, Abstract Rude, Mikah-9, 2Mex, Xololanxinxo, Fat Jack, Daddy Kev, Paris Zax, and Omid. His releases for Celestial, Massmen, Mush and Afterlife, have received glowing praise in The Wire, Muzik, Village Voice, and XLR8R among many others, landing him a spot in Urb's lauded Next 100 as well as getting a ton of critical praise for his latest album on Epitaph.

Before we get to an exclusive Q&A with recent Epitaph signing/beloved LA underground rapper Busdriver, R5 would like to explain what you're about to see hometown hero RJD2 do. Never one to repeat the same set twice (and how could he when the dude's been known to mix tracks on three turntables and a microphone?), RJ's decided to develop his XL debut, The Third Hand, on the road with a full band; as in guitar, bass, drums, keys and, yes, vocals. Yeah. We'd explain more but that'd ruin the surprise.

On the Busdriver tip, he called R5 from some hotel in Vermont to talk politics and Bright Eyes.

Does the lack of socially conscious hip-hop in the mainstream bother you?

No, because that's a different world. We don't participate in that. We are part of the subculture. That's pop stuff.

How do you think the west coast scene is doing right now in relation to its heyday a decade ago?

It's in a transition point because a lot of indie groups got signed, like Dilated [Peoples], Blackalicious and J5. They put out their albums and now it's time for them to come with something else. I'm curious to see what happens next. It's definitely not as interesting as it was in the early '90s.

What are you watching on TV? I can hear it blasting in the background.

The VH-1 thing on Biggie. I've seen it a thousand times.

Your music is very political, but it comes at issues with humor as opposed to the militant Public Enemy vibe.

It's not like I am trying to come with this self-righteous, conscious rapper image. It's just things I find interesting. That's really it.

To what extent are you influenced by jazz and scat-cats like John Hendricks?

I think that's an art form that parallels the kind of underground hip-hop we do in LA. It's similar in the way you phrase things and write. It's always been a part of my shit. I am really into John Hendricks, King Pleasure, Eddie Jefferson and Nina Simone. It involves the vocal dexterity we shoot for.

Your first group was named after the L.A. riots. Where were you when they were going on?

I was 13 or 14 at the time. My parents kept me in and I watched it on TV. All my homies were out trying to take advantage at stores. I was close to everything, so there was ash covering our lawn, our house and our cars. It was very intense afterwards. I went to a school with a lot of ethnic groups and there was a lot of tension between the blacks, Koreans and the Mexicans. I didn't realize the impact at the time, but I was shocked. I wasn't that surprised. I was glad the riots happened, but I didn't like how it was portrayed on the news, making it look like it was an opportunistic situation. People had a right to freak out.

You've written a lot of songs taking stabs at people like hipsters and backpacking hip-hoppers. Does the majority of your audience fit into those categories and, if so, is that frustrating?

It's not frustrating. It's funny. It's something that happens. I'm happy and glad. I welcome everyone with open arms. I'm just poking fun.

But what about the fact that most of the people who come to your shows are white?

That's what it is. It's kind of frustrating, but I'm at the point where I am so used to it I don't even trip (laughing). Most of the shows in the country are predominantly white and Asian. There's hardly any black people, anywhere. Certain demographics pay attention to this under-the-radar sort of music.

Do you wish the audience was more diverse though?

I care, but I don't feel like that's up to me. I don't cater my shit to anyone. I just do what I think is cool. Of course, I would like more of my 'people' to be in the house, but that doesn't happen for whatever reason. I'm sure one day it will. But right now, I am just trying to work.

URB put you on the list of 10 MCs to watch out for a couple years ago. Do you ever think, 'where were you guys for the past 10 years, since you've been doing this since the '80s?'

I do and I don't. Honestly, in this kind of music, there is no concrete, documented history. There's a lot of misconceptions. I just try to use any means to get out there. I can't trip on what people know and don't know. I can't impose my ideologies on people who write about this shit.

I'm sure someone will call you scat-rap by the end of the year. What's the deal with the bluegrass band you were once in?

We played a lot of different music, including bluegrass. I didn't know anything about it. But they schooled me on it. We also did swing-jazz, blues and some rock. It was a little acoustic live band I had in high school. I would improvise and they would treat me like an instrument.

What records are you listening to right now, since your music is all over the place?

Bright Eyes. He whines a lot sometimes, but I like it for the most part. I also like Aphex Twin a lot. He's the man. I also listen to a whole lot of Mia Dai Todd and Saul Williams.

The two of you sound similar actually.

That's funny. We've been working on a song or two together in LA. He can really write.

Do you ever get worried about losing listeners before the end of a record, since your flow is so wild?

Yeah, well I overwrote the last record and the new one. I understand if people can't make it through. People's attention spans are short. I usually can't when it comes to other people's stuff.

How about that George Bush?

I think he's a sign of the end. He's the worst public speaking politician ever. But that's besides the fact that he's inciting all this evil. I think this is the genuine start of the new world order. It's crazy because all these conspiracy theorists are starting to be right. It really sucks, but there's not much you can do about it.

The Junior Boys
Forward-thinking pop and R&B for indie kids, aided and abetted by traces of Timbaland's go-pop-start-stop-stutter production techniques. The Junior Boys have managed to release two almost flawless albums. Their first one even managed to land the number one spot on Wire Magazine's best albums of 2004 as well as making the top 10 for The New York Times, Pitchfork etc. Their latest album "So This Is Goodbye" is even better : Music so smart, yet so obvious, that it must have been there all along, waiting for someone to snatch it from our collective subconscious and make it our soundtrack for late-night driving and pre-party preening. Not to say this isn't a dance-minded record... More than blazing a trail, Junior Boys are simply a half-step ahead on the same path, finding the most predictable and logical rubbery synth or icy croon just a moment before we think of it. Domino Records.
Sound Clips :
1) In The Morning | 2) Teach Me How To Fight | 3) Like A Child | 4) Birthday

San Serac
Cheesy Casio-lite melodies, 80s drum machine percussion and the all-important droll semi-spoken word vocals which give his music all that character. His dry-ice flecked tales of American life are guaranteed to put a smile on your face, and with the 80s now officially ‘big in Berlin’ or something, maybe everyone will start to get their groove on along with him. Output Recordings.
Sound Clips : Check Out San Serac's Myspace Page

Without the stuttering, r&b-influnced beats of their debut, it's harder to prop up The Junior Boys' latest LP So This Is Goodbye as bold or innovative pop. Rather, it aims for a distinctly different yet similarly difficult route: Music so smart, yet so obvious, that it must have been there all along, waiting for someone to snatch it from our collective subconscious and make it our soundtrack for late-night driving and pre-party preening. Not to say they are not dance-minded - one listen to "Double Shadow" or "In the Morning" firmly proves otherwise-- just a surprisingly classicist one. More than blazing a trail, Junior Boys are simply a half-step ahead on the same path, finding the most predictable and logical rubbery synth or icy croon just a moment before we think of it.

It's how you always wished the Pet Shop Boys sounded. With his irresistibly smooth vocal stylings Jeremy Greenspan perfectly lays that laid back inviting voice atop all of those synths, guitar, bass, drums and a laptop, creating a fully realized electronic pop sound. While so many others playing so called electro-pop are smothered in irony and look-at-us-we're-so-hip garb it's so refreshing to listen to the Junior Boys as they mean what they play and do it so so well. If you miss the magic of early Depeche Mode and Japan records you should check these guys out. The kind of sounds that you want to hear after a long night out, it not only keeps the beat on the dance floor, but when you finally get home, it slows things down and lets unwind as you take off your dance shoes and sink into some new romantic dreams. So nice!
