[R5] Silversun Pickups * Album Leaf * Mono * Frog Eyes * Lots Of New Shows !
Hellos !
It's been awhile since our last mailing - we've been taking it easy for springtime, but next week things pickup with 5 straight shows - including one of our favorite bands (sean says it is definitely HIS favorite band ) : SILVERSUN PICKUPS who will be playing The Trocadero on Monday May 14th.
We have two back to back instrumental shows at the church with THE ALBUM LEAF on Tuesday May 15th and MONO on Wednesday May 16th. Our week ends on Thursday May 17th with Canada's FROG EYES who were given several BEST NEW MUSIC nods from Pitchfork. One of the most underrated bands - especially after seeing them live (after Sunset Rubdown) at the church. But it all starts off on Sunday May 13th with the heavy-CAN-like krautrock of TUSSLE plying with the hyped up PROFESSOR MURDER (who kinda live in philly now) at the Avant Gentleman's Lodge warehouse in West Philly.
We also added a ton of new shows for the likes of TORTOISE (!), MIRAH, FUJIYA & MIYAGI, PIG DESTROYER, BAYSIDE (acoustic), KING DJANGO and even a KILL THE MAN WHO QUESTIONS reunion. All of the additions are down below with our complete schedule...
As always we have full show previews for our upcoming shows (down below). We updated our media player and uploaded a bunch of new sound clips so you can discover your new favorite band. Fun ! Ohh and in the news section we have the video clip that shocked many of a Philadelphia show-go'er who happens to watch Gilmore Girls (and apparently there is lots of you) .
Last thing - peep the Dan Deacon / To Live And Shave In LA show info for tonight (and the very bottom) - thats where we will be

Silversun Pickups
After playing to just 50 people at The First Unitarian Church this past August - The Silversun Pickups have blown the fuck up. Supporting some big, giant bands over the last few months, appearing on every imaginable late night TV show all the while managing to maintain that indie cred. Silversun Pickups' abstract lyrics, distorted guitars, delicate melodies, and hypnotic rhythms linger long after the music ends, leaving listeners wanting more. SPIN says : "live, they blast away with a swampy, bass-heavy sound, spinning vaguely twee vocals into swirling pools of Sabbath riffage..." We say "they sound like an awesome version of The Smashing Pumpkins in 2007". We love this band, and so should you. Dangerbird Records.

Sea Wolf
Yes we know there’s a crazy number of hyped up "blog bands" with 'wolf' in their name lately, but this wolf is one to sit up and take notice of. Sea Wolf is the moniker of multi-instrumentalist Alex Church, former member of Los Angeles indie-pop wonders Irving. Dangerbird Records.

Ok - I am going to be honest with this one. This is by far my favorite show that's coming up this spring. I usually hate the whole LA rock scene - but Silversun Pickups just seem to get "it". They write really catchy, melodic, rock songs with just enough effects and atmospherics to set them apart from Jet or whatever other crap rock bands are out there. And each and every time I dance / jump up and down to them in my bedroom - I hear something new on their album each time. They managed to appear on Jay Leno, David Lettermen, Jimmy Kimmel, Carson Daly and every other TV show ever - while staying on a small indie label. They've toured arenas and giant cavern like concert halls opening up for some bigger bands and finally they are back in Philadelphia playing their own shows.
Their debut full-length is the sort of record that brings something new to the table with each listen. Thus, listen one is as enjoyable as listen five or ten, but probably for entirely different reasons, since unique bits continuously appear from the band's dream haze of accessibly textured indie rock. From the grainy opening of "Melatonin" that blends into strikingly harmonized male/female vocals, the quartet immediately showcases their innate sense of melody amid textured atmospherics and layers of distortion and fuzz, which all come across as both bittersweet and enchanting. Silversun Pickups take the shimmering dream pop of My Bloody Valentine and filter it through '90s grunge instincts like that of the Smashing Pumpkins -- and it all combines to produce an album that, well, is really freaking good.
Vocals are both haunting and sweet, as lead singer Brian Aubert somehow manages to sound like a cross between the Goo Goo Dolls' Robby Takac and the Get Up Kids' Matt Pryor -- in a good way. And for every moment of ominous intensity, the band further manipulates their ethereal antics into moments of pure shimmering redemption. "Future Foe Scenarios" is urgent in a completely controlled way that makes the vocals come off even fiercer over the song's driving distortion, while exhilarating and spacious cuts like "Lazy Eye" and "Common Reactor" materialize out of clouds of hazy guitars and pensive keyboard with dynamic force that never loses its direction. Though an extremely rewarding listen, proceed with caution: once put into a stereo, Carnavas may become stuck inside for quite a while. Ohh and their videos are AWESOME :

The Album Leaf
The Album Leaf has made a name for themselves as the American counterpart to (and comrade of) those grand glistening soundmakers Sigur Ros and Mum. Over the years his music has drawn more and more from the same wintry palette as those Icelanders. However on his fourth and latest album, Album Leaf central force Jimmy Lavalle's mellow post-rock roots from his days in the San Diego band Tristeza resurface more prominently than on previous albums. Gently grooving songs like "Writings On The Wall" also bring to mind an American version of Thr Notwist. To boot, Lavalle is singing more than ever. Oddly enough we initially though he sounded a lot like a less morose Pall Jenkins of Black Heart Procession (bringing back to the fore another element from his past -- he played with them too), however we soon discovered that the voice actually was Jenkins'. Yup, the BHP singer contributed some backup harmonies to his buddy's album. The overall results are not such a vast departure from his past records, but they do cut some welcome fresh glistening facets into his lovely resonant tried and true. Sub Pop

Young Galaxy
Stephen Ramsay of STARS (the canadian band) has a new project called Young Galaxy, which Arts & Crafts recently announced signing. Young Galaxy is the work of Ramsay and partner Catherine McCandless, who together have crafted some space-age bachelor pad indie-pop launched squarely between Broken Social Scene's more ambient, free-floating sounds, and Stars' rocket-fuelled melodies; a perfect fit for Arts & Crafts, then.

Belong
A duo from New Orleans that follow in the tradition of fuzzed-out folks like My Bloody Valentine, Flying Saucer Attack, and Spacemen 3--though the band cites William Basinski and Fennesz as inspiration. Ambient melody-suffused pieces that can either put you at ease or scare the crap out of you (depending on how loud you listen to it). Carpark Records.
Sound Clips :
1) Track 01 | 1) Remove The Inside | 2) Red Velvet Or Nothing
The Album Leaf's latest LP, Into the Blue Again, doesn't just pull from Jimmy LaValle's usual production palette of clicks, cuts and keys; it presents a promising set of laptop balladry (“Always For You,” “Wherever I Go”), ambient Eno classicism (“Wishful Thinking”), and even an attempt at shifty electro funk (“Red-Eye”). That last one isn’t so much a surprise given Joshua Eustis’ position as an additional engineer and drum programmer. The primary arranger in Telefon Tel Aviv, he’s always towed the line between computer processors and Carnegie Hall. Which was really the Album Leaf’s unspoken goal to begin with.
Wondering what's up with the former Tristeza/Locust/Black Heart Procession member as of late, we poked and pried LaVelle with a few questions.
You’ve played in nearly every important indie band from the San Diego area over the years. Why is Album Leaf the one thing you’ve stuck with? Is it an ego thing?
It kinda just came to a point in time where Tristeza wasn’t going in the direction I wanted—adding beats into it. The drummer was also having a baby, so it seemed like the right time to go my own way so I could focus on one thing.
How long were you technically in the Locust? It’s hard to tell because of the suits.
Three years. I still have the word “Locust” tattooed on my bottom lip, which is kinda funny.
Got any good stories from that time period?
It was definitely crazy good times. I miss the intimacy of that time. Now that we have like 12 keyboards on stage, doing simple stuff isn’t so simple anymore. Then again, I wouldn’t change how we do our shows because I really enjoy it.
Were you bummed out about Gogogo Airheart’s recent breakup?
I just wish they had gotten more credit. Look at a band like the Rapture, who was from the San Diego area. [Vocalist] Luke [Jenner] used to go to Gogogo shows and their old keyboardist was dating the violinist from Gogogo. They were totally influenced by them.
Anthem recently had a feature on San Diego as if a ‘scene’ just sprung up there.
Why didn’t they talk to me?
You were probably busy with Sigur Ros or something.
[Laughs] Not this time. Recording the last record in Iceland was great, but I didn’t get to use any of my own instruments. That’s a strange thing because I pride myself on my collection of vintage keyboards.
You’re not one of those guys are you? How many keyboards do you have?
I have about 14. I live in a three-bedroom house with my girlfriend, and one of the rooms is just a wall of keyboards. So, yeah, it was cool to use them. This time, I went [to Iceland] just to do the lyrics and mix.
Sounds like an excuse to go on vacation.
[Laughs] Actually, the main excuse is the guy I work with there [engineer Brigir Jon Birgisson]. He just brings so much life to records.
How much did Josh add to the beats?
Well, he has a totally different approach. He’s much more advanced. He also has access to this major label studio in LA, where he does bullshit things just to make money.
Like the Nine Inch Nails stuff he did?
Exactly. Like the commercials I did for TV five years ago. That was a very unhappy musical time in my life because it was so boring.
It must be hard to keep your music sounding fresh overall, since it’s so simple and almost entirely instrumental.
It eventually comes to a point where it’s like, ‘Fuck it. The record’s gonna be what it is.’ I did work with some new chord progressions and key changes on this record, so I was stoked about that.
“Red-Eye” sounds different.
I would love to have some hip-hop guy rap over that. Like Jay-Z or some bullshit. That would be pretty sweet.
Jay-Z is out of retirement, you know.
Well I probably won’t get him. That song was a special accident for sure. I don’t know where it came from in terms of approach.
Do you find yourself reverting to your classical training as you get older?
I don’t know. I think that kind of works against me in the long run because I’m not ballsy on certain notes. I guess that’s my sound though—I’m not the ballsiest of writers.

Mono
The masters of the epic, soft-loud, post-rock-athon from Japan. Instrumental, slow-building majesty, that will sound familiar to, and be welcomed by, fans of Mogwai, Kinski, Godspeed, Explosions In The Sky, etc. You know - Searing, loud, psychedelic guitar epics. Not groundbreaking per se, but a consistent band who does what they do really well. Temporary Residence Limited followers will not be disappointed.

World's End Girlfriend
World's End Girlfriend is the musical project of Katsuhiko Maeda. Placing the Japanese band's music into one well-defined genre is difficult, as it blends elements of electronica and post-rock to create a unique style. His latest release is Hurtbreak Wonderland (2007).

Grails
Members of JACKIE-O MOTHERFUCKER, HOLY SONS, and MOSS ICON. Previously often compared to Godspeed You Black Emperor) with a flame of anxious tension, extreme dynamics, and an urgent tone their new material is an idiosyncratic mission statement (for future Grails recordings). Revealing their fondness for the groundfloor ‘60s and’ ‘70s experimental artists that saw music as a process of discovery as opposed to the preconceived, pre-parametered, commodified sport that underground music has become. A parallel is now forming between Grails and old-school experimental bands like Faust who, rejecting their past, started over from the beginning to build new languages in music. Neurot Recordings.

World peace: That’s all Mono wants from us. Not exactly the sort of dead-serious mission statement you’d expect from a band who’s bombastic, firework finale of a second album is called One Step More And You Die (Temporary Residence).
“It’s been great to experience the new meetings across the borders, over different cultural backgrounds or different languages,” explains lead guitarist Taka Goto. “They eased our anger and frustration, and awakened us to open our eyes wide. So we started thinking about what we could do as a Japanese band, to show our appreciation and [share] our opinion of ending any wars happening on the earth.”
Ambitious? Sure. Naïve? Maybe. Either way, Mono went into its third LP with good intentions and emerged with an even better sound––one that’s as fragile as a glass menagerie, yet carries the emotional heft of watching a friend or family member bleed to death before you on a slab of cold concrete. One of the ways Mono achieved this so well was by accentuating their pensive, softer side––opening up patient, plodding spaces in each song and filling them with weeping guitars or washes of contemplative, classical tones from a string quartet. Turns out the 5-year-old band have been listening to a lot of composers lately, from the spaghetti western scores of Ennio Morricone to the think pieces of Henryk Gorecki.
“I wanted our album to have the same texture of the symphonies of Beethoven,” says Goto. “Our favorite composers speak human emotions more than any words can.”
Fair enough. Like its labelmate Explosions In the Sky, Mono is much more than a post-Mogwai instrumental quartet of quiet/loud dynamics, of riffs that batter and caress speakers cones like heavily-treated sine waves. They’re storytellers first, as evidenced by the haiku-long title of Walking Cloud And Deep Red Sky, Flag Fluttered And The Sun Shined and its heavy-as-hell subtext of hope and healing, anguish and death. The central narrative is taken from the traditional Japanese story of Sadako, a radiation victim of Hiroshima. As her body struggled to stay beating and breathing, her friends supposedly crafted a thousand paper cranes as a symbolic (or superstitious, depending on your view) way of wishing she’d get well. Aside from providing a general thematic canvas to paint notes and chords upon, her tale is told through the mournful piano melodies of the closing track “A Thousand Paper Cranes” and the red origami paper Mono actually packaged with the vinyl version. Yes, Goto’s newfound optimism for humanity goes so far as to hoping we’ll fold our own wishes into paper cranes.
“There’s a belief that a wish in a crane would be answered when a thousand cranes were made,” explains Goto. “If it’s too hard for you to fold a crane, you can make use of the paper as memo or letter to your friends. We believe one tiny wish, thinking of someone you care, would eventually end wars.”
For those who’d like to learn more about Mono, we’ve included our full exclusive interview with Goto below …
How did all of you originally meet? Do you remember what some of your first rehearsals were like?
I had a band with Takada, the drummer of Mono, before starting Mono. It was a more ambient instrumental band but eventually we became wanting to play more rock stuff. I invited my old friend Yoda to join us as another guitar and a friend of mine introduced us Tamaki, the bass. There was unknown chemistry from the first time we played together. We have been respecting one another and we’ve been good friends as well ever since we met.
Do you look forward to touring the U.S. every time or does it usually remind you of why most of the world despises us? What were your first impressions of the U.S. and when did you first tour here?
The first US tour was in the winter of 2000. Back then, no one knew about us. Without a fan or a friend, we just kept on going as if we were fighting against something we didn’t know what that was. As we came back over and over, we met more fans, we got more e-mails and we met more bands. Currently we tour the US twice a year and we are always looking forward to coming back. As for the impression of the US, I feel every individual is friendly and very kind, but on the other hand, the nation as a political institution or “Corporate America” sometimes gives us a hard time with intimidating attitude. We feel that when we pass the immigration at the airports or Canadian borders.
Any decent anecdotes in addition memorable moments of being here?
Every tour has been a great travel for us, although it’s not easy in many aspects to go around the entire US. It’s great to see the number of audience is growing every time we come back; only 5 people at the first show, 100 next, then it has becomes 200. It’s very encouraging. And we are very grateful that a lot of musicians and bands who we’ve been admiring have come to our shows and often they have us stay over at their places.
What do you think of how far the Japanese noise rock scene has come? Where is it headed? Are you that into it when you’re home?
There are great bands like Boredoms in Japan but Japan doesn’t have nurturing place for the underground music as much as in the US or in Europe. A lot of good bands are going out abroad, looking for places to perform.
What was it like working with Steve Albini on the last record? Did he push you into some directions you hadn¹t explored before?
On the last album, we just played with our emotions like we played a live set. He captured those multi-layered emotional contents of our play on the tapes. We were always not quite satisfied with the recorded sound. In the studio, the live feeling, tide of emotions was often lost. I wanted our album to have the same texture of the symphonies of Beethoven recorded in 1960’s. Steve is one of a few engineers who can capture the band’s sound as it is, as raw as human emotion.
The overall vibe of Walking was much more quiet and contemplative than your past records. That¹s kind of surprising, given you were working with Steve. Were you simply motivated to try something new with your songs?
After we released the second album One step more and you die and finished the tour supporting the album, we started listening to more classical music with more interest. I began to feel like expressing our joy and sorrow more than anger. I asked Steve to record this album because we needed the sound of silence that only Steve could capture. He’s known for his loud and noisy sound but I really like his silent sound behind the loudness. I agree the tone of this album is quiet as an entire album. But we needed heavier and profound sounds, and Steve understood what we wanted and made the album sound as we wanted. I think we probably couldn’t complete this album without Steve.
It¹s funny because a lot of heavy metal fans like you guys but don’t like other bands like Mogwai or Godspeed. Have you found it hard to keep your songs fresh when you¹re writing in a purely instrumental medium that many people simply compare to Mogwai?
We are not paying attention to either Mogwai or Godspeed as many people may think, especially recent couple of years. Both bands are great and definitely represent today’s instrumental rock music scene. When we write and create music, there’s no comparison or strategy. We just try to create each sound that reflects our feeling, emotion, whatever we want to express. With every album, we want to express those indescribable different feelings by our music more, like a good film does.
Can you tell me a little about how you stumbled upon the story of Sadako; the one that inspired Walking? What did you think about it the first time you heard it and why did you go so far as to include paper cranes in the vinyl version of your record and record “A Thousand Paper Cranes,” a song that was clearly inspired by it?
As I told you, we were sort of wandering around the world to find a place for ourselves when we put out the 2nd album One step more and you die. Luckily we have had great encounter with fans and friends who are now waiting for us. It’s been great to experience the new meetings across the borders, over different cultural backgrounds or different languages. These encounters and new experiences influenced our perception and way to thinking. They eased our anger and frustration, and awakened us to open our eyes wide. Then we started thinking what we could do as one of the Japanese bands traveling all over the world to show our appreciation and our opinion to end any wars happening on the earth. Walking cloud came out as a result. In Japan, there’s a story that friends of Sadako who were the radiation victim of the Atomic Bomb dropped in Hiroshima made a thousand paper cranes with a wish for her to get well. There’s a belief that a wish in a crane would be answered when a thousand cranes were made. If it’s too hard for you to hold a crane, you can make use of the paper as memo or letter to your friends. We believe one tiny wish, thinking of someone you care, would eventually end wars. That’s the theme reflected in the album. We must not repeat the mistake that makes people fear and sadden. We truly believe so.

Frog Eyes
Former BEST NEW MUSIC artist on Pitchfork. Shuddering, intense, grit-and-glam cabaret from Victoria, BC. Trembling, combustible rock magic - complete with a hoary growl barking lyrical turns of phrase over heavy beats, skronk, and aching beauty. The band has been turning heads wherever they go, and can count Black Dice, the Animal Collective, Wolf Parade, Mountain Goats, Hot Hot Heat, Polyphonic Spree, and John Vanderslice among their legions of diehard fans. These guys have been an established force for a few years, gaining a wider audience with 2004's less magical The Folded Palm. Still, you get the feeling that for many, the Victoria, B.C. quartet remains no more than a name dropped by Wolf Parade when its members are asked to list their favorite contemporary musicians. As Daniel Johnston or the Vaselines know, a ringing endorsement from a younger, more popular artist can draw new listeners and we really really really think you should check them out. Absolutely Kosher.

CHRIS GARNEAU’s voice lies somewhere between liquid and matter on the scale that is and ever was. Not a person, but a full band. Think Can or Faust all mashed up with the personal disco of Arthur Russell. Think of the electric organ of Terry Riley's Shri Camel, slowly morphing and perpetually in motion, but remaining in step with a guitar-less and Moroder-charged Sparks. And think of a more composed Dead C, where Michael Morley sings about Big Thunder Mountain while holding a beach ball in one hand and fending off the digital shards of musique concrète humming around his ears with the other. JagJaguwar Records.

Simply put, you will be freaked out at some point. It's hard not to be when someone's shuddering, shaking and singing like a possessed preacher onstage, as Frog Eyes frontman/Swan Lake cohort (also featuring key of members the New Pornographers/Wolf Parade) Carey Mercer typically does. Basically, think of an exorcism as performed by Xiu Xiu and Tom Waits' backing band. Now toss four albums of truly adventurous indie rock into the set list and you've got a show that'll shock as much as it stuns you with stellar songwriting. You can not deny the group's uncanny talent for creating manic, beautiful and upsetting songs that seem to exist wholly for themselves. Definitely the recommended you-will-be-converted show of the week. With their ever growing list of "band fans" including : Animal Collective, Black Dice, David Bowie etc etc.
