XM Radio Suspends Opie & Anthony

WASHINGTON and NEW YORK, May 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- XM Radio announced today that the company has suspended Gregg "Opie" Hughes and Anthony Cumia, hosts of "The Opie & Anthony Show" and ceased broadcast of the show for 30 days, effective immediately.
XM Radio deplored the comments aired on "The Opie & Anthony Show" last week. At the time, the company strongly expressed its views to Opie and Anthony, and they issued an immediate apology.
Comments made by Opie and Anthony on yesterday's broadcast put into question whether they appreciate the seriousness of the matter. The management of XM Radio decided to suspend Opie and Anthony to make clear that our on-air talent must take seriously the responsibility that creative freedom requires of them.
As a company, XM provides customers with tools to control what they listen to on XM. "The Opie & Anthony Show" appears on one of XM's explicit language channels (XL). Whenever a radio is tuned to an explicit language channel, the letters "XL" continuously appear on the screen. XM frequently mentions on its explicit language channels that the content may be inappropriate for certain listeners and tells how to "block" channels that feature this type of content. Channel blocking is available through xmradio.com or by calling 1-800-XMRADIO.

-- The National Music Publishers' Association filed a lawsuit against XM Satellite Radio claiming the station is violating copyright laws by providing its customers with a service called XM+MP3 which lets listeners store songs on XM portable players with the option to by played anytime, also the saved songs are active for as long as a subscription lasts (cost about $13/year). A spokesman for XM said the lawsuit by the NMPA "simply represents a negotiating tactic to gain advantage in our ongoing business discussions." The publishers group also sees the XM+MP3 service as a substitute for using iPod-type devices and services like iTunes to purchase music. What the NMPA fails to understand is that the customer is already PAYING for the XM service, this would be seen as a perk plus once a subscription ends you no longer have possession of those saved tracks. The music industry is full of dipshits.

-- Snoop Dogg won't be joining P Diddy in Britain on their co-headlining European tour as Snoop was denied a visa to enter the country. "Snoop and his team are mystified at the decision and are hoping that the British government will reconsider this decision," spokeswoman Celena Aponte said in a statement. "He has asked how he can help rectify the situation and would happily talk to and give assurances to the officials." The Home Office wouldn't comment specifically on the reason Snoop was denied a visa but a statement released stated, "The Home Secretary has the power to refuse entry clearance to non-U.K. citizens if he considers that their presence here would not be conducive to the public good."
